Dayton Proves To Much for Danville in Play-Off Preview

February 10, 2013 - Federal Hockey League (FHL) News Release

(Dayton, Ohio) Today's game is the 3rd in as many nights for the Demonz. The Demonz were successful Friday and Saturday night taking both games from the 1000 Islands Privateers. Last night the Demonz dismantled the Privateers, 12-0, with Jeff Rose posting his 2nd shutout of the season. It should be noted it was a complete team effort where all Demonz players contributed in the shutout victory. The Demonz played responsibly in all 3 zones, providing strong puck support, with an aggressive fore-check and back-check.

Dayton welcomed the Danville Dashers this afternoon. Both teams play against one another in the first round of the playoffs, which begins on March 1st. If each team sent their "A" game today, the series should prove to be chippy and hard fought. Dayton was able to pull out a 4 to 1 win over Danville in today's game.

When asked about the Dashers success in the second half of the season, Dasher forward Lee McClure responded "I believe our team's turnaround, was buying into coach Rob Schweyer's very fundamental game plan, keeping things simple, giving us the ability to mix and match lines. Everyone is singing from the same sheet of music, where in the first half of the season, we were not playing a team game. Individual play and team play most importantly, have translated into us qualifying for the play-offs."

A relatively quiet first period as far as scoring goes, got a little chippy at times. Dustin Skinner's goal at 13:53 gave the Dashers a 1-0 lead, which is where it would end at the end of the first period. However, this would be Danville's only goal of the game. Skinner, scored off the rush, blasting a wrist shot into the top right-hand corner of the net, past Demonz net minder Aaron Barton.

The Demonz seemed to be a little flat in the period, not generating much offense, and at times beaten to loose pucks. Dayton's leading goal scorer Ahmed Mahfouz and Danville's Chris Affinati had a disagreement. Mahfouz would receive a penalty for cross-checking, while Affinati was called for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Dayton found its legs in the 2nd period. Dayton would do all their scoring for the game in the middle frame, with 4 unanswered goals taking a. commanding 4-1 lead. Goal scorers for the Demonz were Nicholas Petriello scoring 2 goals, Ahmed Mahfouz goal (would prove to be the game winner), and Jason Hill's tally.

Petriello and Mahfouz would score 46 seconds apart about 4 minutes in the period, giving Dayton a 2-1 lead. Both goals were scored off the rush.

Jason Hill's goal was the result of Dayton putting offensive pressure low in the Dashers zone, to increase the Demonz lead to 3-1. Petriello would score his second goal of the period and Dayton's 4th with less than 5 seconds on the clock.

The final period continued to be played with an edge, several minor infractions called. Both goalies, Danville's Peter Dundovich and Dayton's Aaron Barton played exceptional games respectfully for both teams.
