Davila, Weber Earn Player Of Week Honors

DURHAM, N.C. - Albany-Colonie's Vic Davila powered out five home runs in his first seven games and was named Daktronics Northern League East Player of the Week for the week of May 27 through June 2.

Fargo-Moorhead's Jon Weber garnered the award in the Central Division. Joliet pitcher Brian Mazone and New Jersey pitcher Steve Fish were selected by league statistician SportsTicker Boston as the recipients of the first weekly pitching award.

Davila, who hit .283 with 13 homers last year to help the Diamond Dogs to a 50-41 final record, went 13-for-29 for the week with 12 RBIs.

RedHawks' OF Jon Weber socked as many extra-base hits as Davila to take the Central Division award. He went 12-for-23 with five doubles and a homer and five RBIs. Weber played last year for Canton of the independent Frontier League and hit .307 with 15 doubles, seven triples and 18 home runs.

LHP Brian Mazone started the 2002 season well after taking the 2001 season off. He earned expansion Joliet's first Daktronics Pitcher of the Week award. In two starts, Mazone gave up one run in 13 innings and recorded one win.

New Jersey pitcher Steve Fish threw a complete game, five-hit shutout last week to earn the East Division pitching honor. Fish, who was traded from Quebec to New Jersey in the middle of the 2001 season, issued three walks and struck out three.
