Danville Dans Looking Forward to Season Opener
May 26, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Danville Dans News Release
(DANVILLE IL) - The Danville Dans will open its 2011 home season with fireworks at the historic Danville Stadium Friday, June 3 against the Nashville Outlaws. The game starts at 6:30 pm. Tickets are available at the door and cost $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for school children. Season tickets are also available at the door and cost $75.00 for 28 games.
"Hopefully after some Dans fireworks on the field, we'll have fireworks after the game," said Dans managing partner Jeanie Cooke. "Danville Township and Vermilion County Federation of Labor traditionally sponsor fireworks for our opening weekend, and we're pleased to have them back as sponsors again this year."
The Dans team is a member of the Prospect League, one of the premier college summer leagues in the nation. Baseball players from California, Texas, Florida, Maryland and all points between come to Danville to improve their fielding skills and batting with wood bats. With this dedication, it is no wonder that some players advance to the major leagues after graduation, including 19 former Dan players - including Mitch Moreland, who played with the Texas Rangers in last year's World Series.
Two of this year's hopefuls are local pitchers. David Toth of Westville, who played at Westville High School, and Aaron Lewellyn of Danville, a Schlarman High School graduate. Both played with Danville Area Community College this past season, and they'll be on the Dans roster this summer.
Joining the team is new Dans manager and head coach, Mike Hutcheon. Hutch managed the Dans from 1989 through 1993, leading the DansÃÂ to Central Illinois Collegiate League regular season and tournament championships in each of those five years.
A graduate of Wayne State College in Wayne, NE, Hutcheon obtained his masters degree at Mississippi State University in 1989, where he spent two years working under legendary coach Ron Polk. Hutcheon resigned last year after seven seasons as head coach of the Air Force Academy Falcons, completing a 20 year collegiate coaching career.
Dan fans attending games will enjoy in-stadium fun, too. "We're pleased to announce that The Varsity Room at the Stadium will again be our concessionaire this year," Cooke said. Dans fans will enjoy Chicago Style Hotdogs and Sno Cones, along with steak sandwiches in the Right Field Grill all season long.
"The Varsity Room is also joining Two-Buck Tuesday this season," Cooke added. All season on Tuesdays, admission is just $2, as well as $2 regular beers and $2 regular hot dogs.
This year also marks the 65th anniversary of the opening of Danville Stadium. Plans are being finalized for a special celebration to be held during the Saturday, July 9th game. "We hope anyone that has played on teams that call Danville Stadium home - including Danville and Schlarman High Schools, DACC, and American Legion Post 210 - will come to the game on July 9 and help us celebrate the history of this fantastic jewel of Danville," Cooke said.
