Kansas City Command News Release

KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Command head coach Danton Barto has been selected to coach in the Third Annual Historic Black Colleges and Universities All-Star Bowl at the Georgia Dome on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. (EST). Barto will coach the West team's linebackers in a game that will showcase 120 draft-eligible seniors from the major HBCU conferences: the Mid East Athletic Conference, Southwest Athletic Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Conference, and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

"It's an honor to be selected to coach in this game," Barto said. "There are only four of these senior showcases a year. I want to do everything I can to help these young men reach the next level." In its three year history, professional scouts from the National Football League, Canadian Football League, United Football League, and Arena Football League have attended the HBCU All-Star Bowl to evaluate the quality of HBCU players available. The bowl week kickoffs with a one day official combine administered by National Football Scouting of Indianapolis, Indiana. The 2011 NFL Draft ended with a total of three players from the 2010 HBCU All-Star Bowl game selected, all drafted in the seventh round. A record total 35 players from the 2010 HBCU All-Star Bowl signed NFL free agent contracts. "I'll be keeping an eye on what's out there," Barto said. "There will be a lot of talented players at this event, and we still have a few roster spots to fill. I'm also excited to get back to coaching. It's been a long offseason."

Before becoming a coach in the AFL and playing professionally in both the AFL and CFL, Barto played collegiately at the University of Memphis (1990-93). He set the school with record 473 career tackles, a mark that still stands, and was a two-time Butkus Award nominee. Barto was named the All-South Independent Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and was inducted into the University of Memphis Hall of Fame in 2006.
