Dans Win 1st Half, 10 Picked as All-Stars

July 2, 2014 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Danville Dans News Release

(DANVILLE, IL) - After a slow 2-4 start while waiting for the entire team to make their way to Danville, the Dans won 9 of their last ten in the first half, including the last six in a row, and wrapped up the first half in first place in the West Division of the Prospect League.

The Dans finished their first 30 games with a 19-11 record, 2 games in front of both Quincy Gems and Terre Haute Rex. That means that the Dans have secured a spot in the divisional championship series August 6-8.

It's been a combination of both hitting and pitching that's led to the first-half championship.

The pitching staff is second in the league in strikeouts with 244, while walking 107 and a league-low 14 hit-by-pitch.

At the plate, the Dans have been hitting - with four of the top ten batting averages in the league - and running, leading the league with 64 stolen bases.

Helping lead the way are a number of players, many of which were honored with selection as all-stars. In fact, when the West Division All-Star team takes the field in Terre Haute on July 8, half of the starters will be wearing a Danville Dans uniforms.

Danville's CJ Burdick (freshman, Univ of San Diego) will be the starting pitcher. He has a 1.02 ERA in six games, and is 4-0 with 34 strikeouts (4th most in the league) while walking just three. Burdick threw a no-hitter against Springfield on June 4, and pitched a one-hit complete game on June 21 against Hannibal.

On the infield will be Keith Shumaker (junior, Millsaps College) at first base and short-stop Austin Bryant (junior, Middle Tennessee State). Shumaker is hitting .336 - fifth in the league - plus walking 13 times. Bryant is hitting .312, 10th best in the league.

Two-thirds of the outfield are Dans, with Ronnie Jebavy (sophomore, Columbia State Community College) in left and Tyler Selesky (sophomore, Florida Gulf Coast) in right. Jebavy is third in the league in hitting (.354) and doubles (nine). Selesky is batting .316, eighth-best.

Reserves selected from Danville include pitcher Bryan Baker (freshman, North Florida), utility infield Cody Gardner (sophomore, Indiana State), catcher Paddy O'Brien (freshman, Santa Barbara City College), 3B Curtis Olvey (freshman, Kent State) and pitcher Cam Wysocki (freshman, Michigan).

Dans manager Eric Coleman will also serve as an assistant coach for the West squad.
