From the Battle Axes:

The upcoming Alisha Wei88man Memorial Tournament is scheduled for the weekend of March 21-23. Its inaugural year was in March 2013, and through countless favors and tireless volunteers, the Danbury Battle Axes women's recreational ice hockey team were able to donate $3000 to the Tuft's University Travis Fund for Needy Animals (which helps bring financial assistance to found animals and helps responsible owners cover the cost of unanticipated veterinary needs) and $675 to the Danbury Animal Welfare Society in memory of their friend, Alisha Weissman.

Sadly, Alisha died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on January 24, 2012 . Although Alisha was just 39 years old, she had beaten breast cancer, was a well-respected veterinarian and a beloved teammate on the Danbury Battle Axes. She was such an inspirational and remarkable young woman that the Battle Axes retired her number (#88) and started the Alisha Wei88man Memorial Tournament in her honor.

This year, the Battle Axes hope to raise even more money through raffles, silent auctions, and t-shirt sales. They will be at the Whalers game Friday March 21, cheering them on and fundraising for the AW88 Tournament. The Battle Axes have acquired some great raffle prizes and silent auction items including signed pucks from Olympic Silver Medalists Meghan Duggan and Julie Chu accompanied by pictures of them, a jersey and a puck signed by Stanley Cup winner Adam Graves of the Rangers, a Jeremy Roenick signed puck, a Dougie Hamilton signed puck from the Bruins, and lots more!!!

Please be generous with your support for the Alisha Wei88man Memorial Tournament.

Saturday - St. Gregory the Great in Danbury, Green Chimney's Brewster, HH Wells Middle School in Brewster, and the Danbury Crush Softball team.

Green Chimneys School is located in both Brewster and Carmel, New York

"Helping young people to maximize their full potential by providing residential, educational, clinical and recreational services that create and nurture connections to the community and the natural world."

Located a few miles from the New York/Connecticut border, Green Chimneys School is designed for students who have been unsuccessful in a traditional educational setting and who require a highly structured and supportive program. Their therapeutic program incorporates academic, behavioral and emotional support into a comprehensive learning environment to help each child achieve new skills and confidence with the goal of returning to their home school district with the best chance of success.

Green Chimneys offers residential therapeutic programs, accredited special education, environmental and recreation programs, animal-assisted therapy for students with social, emotional, learning and behavioral challenges, as well as spectrum disorders. Each of their programs celebrate the dignity and worth of all living things. Their goal for the children, staff, and all who partner with them is to bring knowledge and meaning to their relationships with the world, and with each other.

Green Chimneys' philosophy is based on the belief that if children are given a chance to explore and discover their inherent strengths in a safe and structured nature-based environment, their self-esteem, compassion, coping and social skills will improve. The concept of an enriched treatment setting that brings people together with animals and plants in a mutually beneficial relationship lies at the foundation of the Green Chimneys approach that supports a safe and healing environment in which everyone feels safe, respected, and included.

The monies raised at the March 22nd game will help the Green Chimneys Parent Association give back to the Green Chimneys campuses by providing the opportunity for families to work together on many campus beautification projects that without their help could not be achieved. By working together to improve the areas of need, the Danbury Whalers will be helping Green Chimneys parents to show their appreciation by contributing to the school in ways that would never be possible otherwise.
