Vote for the Player Awards

Fans it is that time of the year to vote on the Danbury Whalers team awards.

The categories this year are the William E. Barnes Most Valuable Player Award, the People's Choice Award as the most popular player, the WLAD Radio Top Forward, and the Top Defenseman.

Here is the background on the William E. Barnes Most Valuable Player Award.

As announced on Opening Night 10/29/10, the Danbury Whalers organization is proud to recognize the naming of the team's MVP Trophy as the William E. Barnes Danbury Whalers Most Valuable Player Award.

William Barnes was one of the four founders of the New England Whalers franchise in 1971, which when relocated in 1974, went on to become known as the Hartford Whalers.

Mr. Barnes was a cornerstone of the Whalers franchise heading the team's business and marketing operations for most of the 25 years of the organization's existence.

Mike Barnes, an 11-year employee of the Hartford Whalers and son of William Barnes, is part of the Danbury Whalers ownership group.

Mr. Barnes had a great philosophy on life and business. He believed in calling people by their names, looking a person in their eyes when you spoke with them, always being gracious, and having the highest ethical standards.

I was fortunate enough to have worked for Mr. Barnes for two seasons while with the Hartford Whalers in the late 80's. Many of the lessons, concepts, and strategies learned in those years are still applied today in our operation of the Danbury Whalers.

To many, Mr. Barnes will always be the MVP of the Hartford Whalers and we are honored to name this award after him.

Danbury Whalers Call-Ups

This Past Weekend

The Federal Hockey League was founded with the purpose of being a feeder league, providing a platform for players to hone their skills and go to higher levels. No team has done a better job of this than the Danbury Whalers. This weekend, six players who have donned the green and white skated for four different ECHL teams.

While the Whalers are proud to be the affiliates of the ECHL's Elmira Jackals, no Whalers were with the Jackals this weekend. Rather, Whaler forwards Alec Kirschner and Martin Moucha were in the lineup as the Wheeling Nailers battled the Jackals in Johnstown, PA for Atlantic Division supremacy. Kirschner's assist on Denver Manderson's first goal of the night gave the Long Island native his first ECHL career point as the Nailers won 4-2 and Kirschner earned second star honors. The remainder of the weekend proved to be less successful, as Reading shut out Wheeling 4-0 on Saturday night and last-place Trenton earned a 5-1 victory at home.

The Titans had goaltender Nick Niedert and defenseman Anthony Pisano for the weekend action. After dropping a 4-2 tilt at home to Reading, Trenton trounced Elmira 8-1 on the road before the big victory Sunday. Pisano was a +1 in the first two games before sitting out Sunday's game against the Nailers. Niedert didn't get to goaltend this weekend.

Whalers defenseman Stephen Mallaro earned his third call-up this season last week as he signed to play with the Gwinnett Gladiators. He traveled with the team this weekend as they visited North Division members Chicago, Kalamazoo, and Cincinnati. The Gladiators took Friday in Chicago 4-3, won a 4-3 shootout against the K-Wings in a battle of first-place teams Saturday night, before dropping a 3-2 regulation decision to Cincinnati President's Day. Mallaro suited all three games and while he didn't register a point, he was a +1 for the weekend as Gwinnett extended their lead on the South Division to three points.

The Whaler who has been playing the longest this season in the ECHL is defenseman Chris Clark. Clark moved from Trenton to Cincinnati and is now helping the Cyclones battle for a playoff spot. The Cyclones dropped a tough 5-4 shootout loss on Friday to first place Kalamazoo, but bounced back with a 7-3 victory in Chicago and got the 3-2 win at home over the Gladiators Monday. Clark played all three games, earning +1 rating but no points and no penalty minutes over the stretch.
