Danbury Whalers Weekly - Yes! Grace Rocks to Promote Helmet Safety

September 27, 2011 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Danbury Whalers News Release

The Danbury Whalers will drop the puck for their season opener at home on October 27th with a fundraiser to support the Yes! Grace Rocks Foundation's Helmet Safety Campaign.

The evening will include a Chuck-a-Puck competition for fans at intermission and a silent auction for Danbury Whalers experiences. A portion of the proceeds from the Chuck-a-Puck competition and ticket sales for the game, as well as all the proceeds from the silent auction, will benefit Yes! Grace Rocks.

Yes! Grace Rocks is a non-profit foundation based in Southbury, CT that provides support for the families of children with serious brain injuries or illnesses. The foundation was formed two years ago to honor and support Grace Sturm, a New Fairfield 10-year-old girl currently recovering from surgery for a brain tumor.

"We chose to promote helmet safety this year targeting teens because this is the age young people stop wearing helmets because they are seen as uncool," said Claire Craven, chairperson of the campaign for Yes! Grace Rocks. "Each year, 1.4 million people in the United States suffer traumatic brain injuries, often leading to permanent disabilities or death, and children up to age 19 are at the highest risk for such injuries."

Craven said the Yes! Grace Rocks board members were inspired to start the Helmet Safety Campaign by the story of 17-year-old competitive swimmer Joseph Stanton, who suffered a severe brain injury while skateboarding in his driveway June of 2010. A competitive swimmer from Texas with Olympic aspirations before his accident, Stantoncontinues a long recovery from his injury. Through contacts with Yes! Grace Rocks, Stanton's family asked the foundation to support helmet safety to help prevent such injuries.

The Danbury Whalers game will take place at the Danbury Ice Arena at 7:35 p.m. against the New Jersey Outlaws. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under age 10. Fans can purchase tickets by emailing whalertickets@yesgracerocks.org and the Danbury Whalers will donate $4 for every adult ticket and $2 for every child's ticket sold through the promotion to Yes! Grace Rocks.

"We are excited about starting our second season in Danbury," said Keith Lombard, Danbury Whalers Assistant General Manager. "We are committed to giving back to our community and like Yes! Grace Rocks we are committed to encouraging everyone, and especially teens, to wear helmets whether they're playing hockey, biking or skateboarding. Anything we can do to help get the message out and save even one kid is worth it."

For the Chuck-a-Puck competition, fans can purchase a pack of three numbered pucks for $5 in the lobby and during intermission will be able to throw them at a target on the ice. The pucks closest to the target win a cash prize and various special offers such as food and local services. Fans also can view and bid on silent auction items in the lobby on the evening of the game, such as opportunities to practice with the team or be assistant coach for the day.

About Yes! Grace Rocks

Area friends formed Yes! Grace Rocks shortly after Grace's surgery two years ago, with the goal of raising money to aid the Sturms and other families who have children who have suffered brain injury due to accident or illness. The foundation has since expanded and is a 501(c)(3) organization providing support for things such as emergency transportation, music therapy, family assistance grants, physical therapy mats and other items to aid in recovery, and a scholarship for college students in the fields of physical or occupational therapy, special education or nursing.
