DANBURY - The Danbury Titans added another familiar face to their roster for the upcoming Federal Hockey League with the signing of defenseman David Mead, a former Danbury Whaler.

The soon-to-be 23-year-old played in 12 games for the Whalers during an injury-shortened rookie season last year. He registered two assists and collected 46 penalty minutes while compiling a plus-3 rating.

Titans head coach Phil Esposito liked what he saw from Mead last year with the Whalers.

"I was looking forward to having him last year, and then he had the concussion problems that he had and missed part of the season," Esposito said Friday. "Then he came back and got hurt again and was out for the rest of the year. I was counting on him last year to be one of my top, steady, stay-at-home defensemen, and it just didn't work out for him. Now he's better, he was cleared by the doctors and he's ready to go."

A stout defense was one of the calling cards of Esposito's Whaler teams, and the 6-foot-1, 228-pound Mead, who hails from the Binghamton, N.Y., area, seems to fit that mold.

"He's a big, tough kid who plays physical and he's not afraid to get in people's faces," Esposito said. "He does what he's supposed to do in front of our net. It'll be nice to have him back."

Mead joins forward and fellow ex-Whaler Matt Caranci as the players who have signed with the Titans. The new Danbury franchise selected several former Whalers in the recent FHL expansion draft, including defensemen Steve Brown and Kristaps Nimanis and forwards Ryan Patsch, Dean Yakura, Micky Knox and Tim Richter. The Titans drafted former Danville Dashers goalie Breton Lindoff with its first pick and also grabbed forwards Phil Bronner andDane Erickson and defenseman Aaron Atwell from the defending-champion Watertown Wolves and forward Zach Tatrn and defenseman Bo Driscoll from the Steel City Warriors.

The Titans are scheduled to open the regular season on the road on Nov. 6 against the Brewster Bulldogs at the Brewster Ice Arena. The two teams will play again at the Danbury Arena on Nov. 7. The Bulldogs are coached by former Whalers captain David Lun.
