Danbury Whalers News Release
Danbury, Connecticut - What a difference 24 hours makes. Friday night we had the snow storm. Saturday night came the avalanche.
Led by star of the game, Alec Kirschner, who scored twice and assisted on another, the Whalers overwhelmed the visiting Rome Frenzy for Danbury's 11th home win in 14 Ice Arena games.
The Whalers came out aggressively in the first period, crashing the boards and carrying the play to Rome's end of the ice most of the period, even while playing shorthanded. Despite being officially outshot 12-9 by the Frenzy, Danbury had the better of the opportunities, constantly centering the puck in front of the net, efforts that would pay off later in the game.
In a penalty dominated second period the Whalers finally broke through at 12:28 on their 15th shot of the game, as Steve McClelland blasted a 45-foot slap shot past Rome goalie Rich Scarsella much to the delight of the hometown fans. About a minute later Sean O'Malley made it 2-0 Danbury, coming down the left side, letting loose a shot that Scarsella was only able to get a small piece of. At 4:11 Igor Karlov put a shot on goal and followed up knocking in his own rebound for a 3-0 margin. Less than a minute later, playing shorthanded, Alex Kirschner stole the puck at center ice, hustled down the left side skated across the front of crease and beat Scarsella on the right side, sending Danbury to the locker room with a well deserved 4-0 lead.
In the third period it was "déjàvu all over again" as Kirschner stole the puck at center ice, skated in unmolested for another shorthanded score and a 5-0 Danbury cushion at 7:12. For the Frenzy, who outshot the Whalers 35-29 on the night, Kirill Doronin finally found the net, breaking the shutout attempt by Nick Niedert, who earned #2 star of the game honors.
