Huntington Heroes News Release
Last week he was the QB coach. This week he traded in his whistle for shoulder pads and a helmet. Dane Damron, the 35 year old Heroes QB, may be what head Coach Garry McPeek is looking for as he turned in the best QB performance for the Heroes this season. Damron passed for 247 yards and 5 TDs to lead the Heroes to a 45-44 win over the Erie Freeze Saturday night.
Damron, who hasn't played since his college days at Georgetown College 14 years ago, looked as good as ever connecting on 22 of 34 passes and led the Heroes to scores on their first four possessions. It was a good thing that Damron and the Heroes offense was clicking, because the Erie Freeze were equally impressive going blow for blow with the Heroes.
The Freeze were the first to score when Kevin Scott scored on a 3 yard run that capped off a 5 play 31 yard drive. The Heroes would answer right back, Damron connected with Thomas Riley for a 16 yard TD. The Heroes defense stepped up intercepting a Randall Secky pass to setup the Heroes offense to take the lead for good. Damron connected with Gerald Clark for a 13 yard TD to cap off a 3 play 24 yard drive off of the turnover.
The teams would fight back and forth the rest of the first half with the Heroes holding a slim 26-23 halftime lead. The Heroes would start the second half off with a bang as Damron found Gerald Clark again, this time on a 30 yard TD toss to extend the lead to 33-24. The Freeze would answer with a 24 yard TD strike to cut it to 33-31. The Heroes added a safety to make it 35-31 going into the fourth quarter.
With 9:29 left in the game the Freeze appeared to be in position to tie the game. Josh Lidell caught an 8 yard TD pass from Secky, but J.R. Cipra missed the PAT letting the Heroes stay ahead 38-37. With 6:33 to go the Heroes struck again, with James Hawkins catching a 13 yard TD pass from Damron to make it 45-37. The Freeze scored with 4:13 to go to make it 45-44. The Freeze again seemed to be in position to win it, but with 1:00 left and the Heroes in a 4th down situation the Freeze were flagged for an offsides pentalty. The Heroes ran out the clock to preserve the 45-44 win.
The Heroes receiving corps turned in an effective evening. Gerald Clark caught 10 passes for 91 yards and 1 TD and James Hawkins caught 8 for 87 yards and 1 TD. Damron finished 22 for 34, 247 yards 5 TDs and 1 interception.
The Heroes, while giving up 44 points recorded 5 sacks on the evening. Connie Brown led the way with 5 tackles. Charlie Tynes had an interception.
The Heroes moved to 4-3 while the Freeze drop to 1-7. These teams will meet again this Friday this time in Huntington. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm at Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
