Dallas and Philadelphia look to stay perfect in week six
April 4, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK - The AFL's two lone remaining undefeated teams - Dallas and Philadelphia - are on a collision course that will come to fruition in Week 7 in a game that promises to have major implications on the playoff picture in the National Conference.
However, both teams must remain focused and avoid the trap of looking ahead because both face unforgiving foes this week who will be looking to deliver each team its first loss of the season.
The Soul (4-0), led by QB TONY GRAZIANI, host the Southern Division leading Georgia Force (4-1) and QB CHRIS GREISEN on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Monday this Monday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and ESPN360.com.
This will be Georgia's first-ever visit to the Wachovia Center as they look to bounce back from last week's, 62-61, last-second loss to the Columbus Destroyers which prevented a battle of unbeaten teams this week. Philadelphia will attempt to begin their season 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. The Soul defeated the New York Dragons, 65-60, in New York last Sunday.
Philadelphia, ranked No. 2 in this week's Schutt Sports Poll, won the only contest between the two teams in 2006, 57-41, clinching the first playoff birth in team history.
Graziani (1,034 YDs, 24 TDs) and Greisen (1,508 YDs, 37 TDs) are two of the League's Top-5 rated quarterbacks, with Greisen ranking third (129.3) and Graziani fourth (121.9) in passer rating this season.
Philadelphia has joined Georgia, No. 4, as the first teams in AFL history to score 60-or-more points in the first four games of a season. The game features two of the League's best players on each side of the ball in Force WR CHRIS JACKSON (46 REC, 667 YDs, 14 TDs) and Soul DB EDDIE MOTEN (4 INTs, 25.5 Tackles, 15 PD).
Jackson leads the AFL in receptions (46) and averages 133 yards and three touchdowns per game while Moten, the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 5, leads the League in passes defensed (15) and is tied for the League lead in interceptions with four.
The Eastern Division leading Dallas Desperados welcome the Columbus Destroyers this Thursday, April 5, at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Desperados overcame a 23-point deficit to defeat the Austin Wranglers, 68-64, on Saturday to stay undefeated and push their record to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history.
Dallas, who has held the No. 1 spot in the Schutt Sports Poll the entire season, is led by the AFL's top rated passer, QB CLINT DOLEZEL (134.5). The Desperados are 8-2 in their last 10 home contests and are 5-1 all-time against the Destroyers. Dolezel (1,329 YDs, 32 TDs), who is 2-1 all-time against Columbus QB MATT NAGY, leads an offense that ranks third in scoring (64.6 ppg.) and fifth in total offense (305.0 ypg.).
Dallas' "triplets", that include Dolezel, WR/DB WILL PETTIS, and FB/LB JOSH WHITE, rank in the Top 5 of the major categories for each of their respective positions. Pettis (43 REC, 260 YDs, 16 TDs), the current AFL Ironman of the Month, leads the AFL in all-purpose yards (955), is tied for the lead in first downs (35), and ranks second in scoring (120 points). White, (37 ATT, 138 YDS, 6 TDs) ranks second in rushing yards.
Columbus (2-2) is coming off an impressive 62-61 win over previously undefeated Georgia. Nagy (838 YDs, 18 TDs), led the charge against his former team by completing 20-of-30 passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns. WR DAMIEN GROCE (24 REC, 290 YDs, 8 TDs) leads the team in receiving yards and touchdowns while WR DAVID SAUNDERS leads the team in receptions (28).
The ArenaBowl XX Champion Chicago Rush (4-1) travel to Nashville to face the Kats (2-3) on Saturday, April 7, at 8 p.m. ET on AFL NET. The Rush, No. 3, are playing for its first five-game winning streak in franchise history and hope to keep pace with the Utah Blaze for the best-record in the American Conference. Nashville will look to rebound from a 55-48 last-minute loss to Colorado on Sunday.
