August 22, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - Memphis Xplorers defensive specialist DAHNEL SINGFIELD has been named the ADT Defensive Player of the Year, as selected by af2 head coaches and beat writers.

Singfield, in his second season out of the University of Buffalo, recorded a league high 12 interceptions during the regular season. He returned those for 155 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown return against Birmingham in Week 4. Singfield also led the league in passes defended with 62, 20 more than any other player in the league. He recovered three fumbles and his 73.0 (58UA-30AT) tackles led the team.

The 6-foot, 180-pounder anchored a Memphis defense that allowed a league-low 37.6 points per game during the regular season. Singfield and the Xplorers were fourth best against the pass, allowing just under 222 yards per game.

Singfield was named to the 2005 All-af2 National Conference First Team last week. He earned Second Team honors last year in his rookie season. He was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game four times this season. In Week 12 he earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors for his 6.5 tackles, two interceptions and 10 passes broken-up against Birmingham. Last week he also earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors for his 11.5 tackles and recovered fumble in Memphis' 71-30 victory over Amarillo in the semifinals.

In two playoff games Singfield has amassed 19 tackles (15UA-8AT), two passes defended and a fumble recovery to help the Xplorers advance to their first ArenaCup.

Singfield is the third member of the Xplorers to be honored with a league honor. Head coach DANTON BARTO earned Coach of the Year honors and teammate KHREEM SMITH led the league in sacks with 17.0 and was named Lineman of the Year last week.

Memphis meets the Louisville Fire for the 2005 ArenaCup at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, La., on Saturday, Aug. 27. Pre-game festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. CDT.
