Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Crew (4-5-7, 19 points) plays the first of two consecutive road matches when the club travels to Colorado to face the Rapids (7-5-4, 25 points) at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Friday, July 4 at 9:30 p.m. ET. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel is televising the game, with Dwight Burgess and Chris Doran on the call. Neil Sika is set to describe the action for 95.5 The Game, with Carlos Cordova and Juan Valladares behind the microphone for La Mega 103.1 FM.

Friday's match at Dick's Sporting Goods Park is the first and only meeting between Colorado and Columbus in 2014. All-time, the Black & Gold have a regular-season record of 11-18-8 against the Rapids dating back to 1996. The clubs last met on May 11, 2013 at Columbus Crew Stadium in a match that Colorado won by a 2-0 final, behind goals from former Crew striker Edson Buddle and Dillon Powers. The Rapids have taken the last three meetings between the sides overall.

The Crew has played 10 previous matches on the Fourth of July, with an all-time record of 2-5-3 on the holiday. Two of those previous 10 contests came against the Rapids, with both occurring in Colorado: July 4, 1999 and July 4, 2007. The Crew won the 1999 meeting 3-0 thanks to a brace from Stern John and the 2007 meeting was a scoreless draw. Overall, the Crew has secured points in three of its last four Independence Day matches.

Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark has kept a clean sheet in each of the club's last two contests and now has four shutouts in 2014. Of goalkeepers that have played 16 or more matches in 2014, Clark ranks second in MLS in save percentage (72.31%). Clark trails Sporting Kansas City's Eric Kronberg but has faced 59 more shots than Kronberg through the end of June. Clark also has three five-save performances thus far in 2014.
