Cox dominant in Brownsville win

HARLINGEN, Texas - Adam Cox, a fourth-round pick of Cleveland in 2000, struck out seven in five dominant innings to lead the Brownsville Toros to a 9-1 victory over the Harlingen WhiteWings on Tuesday in the Texas Winter League.

The only two singles off Cox came by Bub Bergstrom. His little roller down the third-base line in the first inning was fielded by Cox and he airmailed it down the right-field line, moving Bergstrom to third. He scored an unearned run on an error by center fielder R.C. Dickerson.

It was all Cox after that. The only other hit he allowed was a single to left by Bergstrom in the third inning. Cox's fastball was timed between 87-92 mph. He struck out four straight at one point, seven total, and walked none.

In 10.2 innings, Cox hasn't allowed a run and struck out 15. Cox pitched last year for the Alexandria Aces and is under contract for this summer as well.

The Toros (5-2), who now have a 1.5-game lead on Harlingen and Laredo, scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead, then busted the game open with a seven-run sixth off reliever Andres Gutierrez.

Brian Spottsville and Brad Turney each had a two-run single in the inning. Brian Nichols had two hits, a run and RBI in the inning. Nichols is 8-for-11 in his last three games with two doubles and a triple.

The current standings: Brownsville 5-2, Harlingen 4-4, Laredo 4-4, Edinburg 2-5.

Wednesday's schedule: Brownsville vs. Laredo at 3:30 p.m., and Edinburg vs. Harlingen at 3:30 p.m.
