Cougars lose to Wave 16-14

(MILWAUKEE, WI) - California headed out on the road minus their two leading point scorers. Vicente Figueroa and Bernie Lilavois were left off the trip due to suspensions for accumulation of yellow cards. Combine those two subtractions to an injured Craig Scheer and the Cougars head into Friday's contest against the Milwaukee Wave looking to veterans Aaron Susi and a slightly hobbled Antonio Sutton to lead them to victory.

The Wave got things started off with a goal midway into the first quarter with a 3-point goal by Michael King with 8:17 left in the quarter. Marcelo Fontana was credited with the assist.

The Cougars hit back in the quarter on a short-handed breakaway by midfielder Brian Farber to make the score 3-2 with 2:13 remaining in the first.

Milwaukee struck back quickly when Greg Howes took a Todd Dusosky assist past starting goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek to make it a 5-2 game.

Defender Antonio Sutton closed the gap scoring on Wave ‘keeper Nick Vorberg 4:24 into the second quarter on an Aaron Susi assist to make it a 5-4 contest.

The Cougars took their first lead of the game on a spectacular 2-point header from forward Enrique Tovar on a long pass from Eduardo Valez to go into the half with a 6-5 lead.

California extended the lead in the second half on an unassisted goal by Tovar for his second of the night.

The Cougars began to pull away from the Wave in the third quarter on a Jorge Martinez goal with 9:44 remaining in the third to make it a 10-5 game in favor of the Cougars.

Wave defender Troy Dusosky took an assist from twin brother Todd to cut the Cougar lead to three 10-7 on a shot past Jakubek with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter.

The Wave tied the game up late in the third quarter on a 3-point shot from midfielder Marcelo Fontana with 1:36 left.

Milwaukee then took the lead 12-10 on a Troy Dusosky goal on a Marcio Leite assist with 11:04 left in the contest.

The Cougars tied the game with a Farber unassisted goal with 6:47 left in the game to make it 12-12.

California re-claimed the lead 1:45 later on an Aaron Susi penalty kick to go up 14-12.

Milwaukee's Guiliano Oliviero tied everything up again at fourteen aside with 2:22 left in the contest. Milwaukee pulled Vorberk and went with a Sixth Attacker and with :45 seconds to go, Troy Dudosky's hat trick gave the Wave the lead for good.

Both teams now must travel to Stockton to face each other in the second half of the home and away doubleheader tomorrow night at the Stockton Arena. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
