Cougars Eliminate Santa Clara From Open Cup

December 21, 2008 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) - California Cougars News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Dec. 20, 2008 - Brian Farber led the way with a team best four goals in Saturday's 11-3 Stockton Cougars (4-1 PASL-Pro, 6-1 Overall) home win at Stockton Arena over Off the Wall Soccer Santa Clara. The win pushes the Cougars to the third round of the United States Arena Soccer Open Cup Championship on January 11 at Stockton Arena.

Farber hit the first goal of the match - for the second consecutive game - almost three minutes into the first quarter. It was the only goal scored during a highly competitive first quarter of play.

Stockton narrowly out shot Santa Clara 10-9 in the quarter. Santa Clara kept a physical presence by committing three more fouls than Stockton did in the first.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead on the foot of defender Josh Copeland when he nailed a goal early in the second frame. Santa Clara, however, halved the lead to 2-1 when Felipe Gonzales struck a shot past Jesus Molina and the Cougars' defense.

The narrow 2-1 Stockton lead lasted nearly five minutes before Farber put the Cougars in the driver's seat. He hammered home an unassisted power play goal at the 5:32 mark of the second. Stockton then ran with the game from there and went on to score three consecutive goals. Ernesto Bueno stopped the streak with just :30 seconds left in the half for Off The Wall.

Neither team scored a single goal in the third quarter.

Stockton dominated possession in the early portion of the fourth. The quarter saw goals from Majell Aterado, Aaron Susi, Uriel Robledo and Farber - his fourth of the match.

Robledo scored two goals in his first professional match. He was signed by the team before the December 13 game against Edmonton.

Vedder took three shots on goal before nailing the first goal of his career in the fourth.

Farber led all scorers with four points.

Former Cougars forward Vicente Figueroa did not score a goal in the match.

Stockton was three of six on power plays. Santa Clara was zero for two.
