Cougars Agree To Contract Terms With Molina

October 21, 2009 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) - California Cougars News Release

Stockton, CA - Oct. 21, 2009 - The California Cougars, of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro), have agreed to contract terms with goalkeeper and PASL-Pro Finals Most Valuable Player Jesus Molina, it was announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Molina, 33, was originally signed by the Cougars as a free agent before the 2008-09 season. He led all PASL-Pro goalkeepers in minutes (839:36), saves (278), and games started (14) last season. Molina finished his first season as a professional with an 11-4 record and 7.36 goals against average.

"Jesus was, in my opinion, the best keeper in the league last year," said Cougars head coach Antonio Sutton. "It's a relief to have him back this year. He solidifies our team and increases our chances to repeat as champions. He's an incredible talent and as far as I'm concerned he won the title for us last year."

Molina was named the PASL Finals MVP on March 15, 2009 after leading the Cougars to their first ever championship title. The Cougars bested the Edmonton Drillers 10-9 in a thrilling overtime match in the Semi-Finals of last season's champion tournament. They then went on to defeat 1790 Cincinnati 13-5 in the final match to capture the inaugural PASL-Pro championship title at Stockton Arena. Molina saved 16 of 21 shots faced and allowed only five goals in the championship match versus Cincinnati.

The Cougars started the 2008-09 season at 4-0 with Molina between the pipes. He began the season with a 24 save and five goals allowed performance versus Colorado in the first ever PASL-Pro match on October 25, 2008 in Stockton. He then bested that performance with a 27 save and four goals allowed match versus San Diego on November 9, 2008.

Molina will most likely start in goal for the Cougars on November 20 when they open the 2009-10 regular season in San Diego. He will then become the first goalkeeper in Cougars franchise history to start in consecutive regular season or season opening games.

"We want to stabilize this franchise and that starts with the ownership and then trickles down to the players," remarked Sutton. "It's my goal to stabilize what we have going on and he (Molina) will be a big part of what we do for a long time."

California's fifth season officially kicks off with an exhibition match against the "Stars of Mexico" on November 8 at Stockton Arena. Tickets are available by calling (209) 373-1550 or by visiting
