Cottonmouths Slither Past 'Hawks, 4-2

Columbus, GA-The Augusta RiverHawks could not stop the Columbus Cottonmouths' Matt Gingera, who tallied a hat trick in a 4-2 win.

Gingera got on the scoresheet 7:08 into the first period. He then added goals at 6:24 into the third and at 11:28 into the third.

Columbus pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 23 penalty minutes.

The Cottonmouths' offense was clicking better than usual and put 30 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.4 shots per game they average. Team could not crack Augusta's penalty kill and was held to one power play goal while having 10 opportunities to play with the man advantage.

Chris Bailer also scored for Columbus. More assists for Columbus came via Jordan Braid, who had three and Sam Bowles and Bret Tyler, who contributed one a piece.

The RiverHawks racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21.0 minutes per game Augusta had been spending in the box. With 35 shots on target during the contest, the RiverHawks exceeded the 17.3 shots they average per game this year.

Augusta was led by Alex Morton, who registered one goal and one assist. Morton scored on the power play 18:11 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Augusta. The RiverHawks had taken the advantage when Columbus' Brett Hammond got sent off for tripping. Dennis Sicard picked up the assist. Augusta also got a goal from Matt Auffrey as well. In addition, Augusta received assists from Curtis Megginson and Jesse Echternach, who each chipped in one.

Ian Vigier recorded 33 saves for the Cottonmouths. Augusta's Robbie Moss stopped 26 shots out of the 30 that he faced. The RiverHawks registered one goal on seven power play opportunities.

The RiverHawks will be on the road until February 16. Their next contest is coming up on January 25 as the Team travels to Knoxville to face the Ice Bears. Fans can watch the road games live at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta.
