Copper Kings Auction Contract for One Week

March 7, 2003 - Arizona-Mexico League (A-ML)
Bisbee-Douglas Copper Kings News Release

The Bisbee-Douglas Copper Kings of the new independent Arizona-Mexico Baseball League announced today that they have put up for auction a professional contract for their inaugural season.

General Manager John Guy said that "the lucky winner can have a dream fulfilled. He'll get a uniform to keep, a week's lodging and rookie pay for one week. He also will appear in at least one game to get his stats into the record book. This is a great Walter Mitty opportunity to be a minor league ballplayer."

Currently listed on eBay, the roster spot will be for one week when the team is at home in Bisbee or Douglas and Guy believes it is the first time a minor league team has actually auctioned off a roster spot for a professional baseball contract.

The Copper Kings also announced that they would be having a Ted Williams Day in Bisbee this summer with the first five-hundred fans getting free popsicles in honor of the late Williams, who is now cryogenically preserved in Arizona. They will also have a Salute to the French Night in which staff will hand out little cheeses and wear berets and have a mime replay close plays at first base throughout the game.

"Unlike what appeared on the Simpsons when Groundskeeper Willie dubbed the French "cheese-eating surrender monkeys," we duly note that the French have given us the guillotine and the Maginot Line and it's time for Americans to give them the recognition they deserve," Guy stated.
