Cooley, Trujillo garner CBL honors

SportsTicker, the Central League's official statistician, has selected San Angelo's Brett Cooley and Coastal Bend's J.J. Trujillo as Central League Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games between May 5 and 8, the first week of CBL action.

Cooley, a native of Minneapolis, hit .438 in four games with two home runs, two doubles, seven RBI and a .938 slugging percentage as the Colts took three out of four from El Paso.

In 2001, Cooley played for San Jacinto Junior College, where he was All-Conference and All-Region after hitting .337 with 17 home runs, 17 doubles and 73 RBI. He then joined the University of Houston in 2002, where he hit 18 home runs, the second-highest total in UH single-season history, Cooley was also named to the All-Conference USA First Team, and was named the C-USA Player of the Week from April 9-15. He spent the summer of 2002 with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League, leading the league with seven home runs. After a 2003 season cut short by a hamstring injury, he hit .303 with 6 home runs and 26 RBIs in 2004. In addition, Cooley made six pitching appearances, going 1-2.

Cooley was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 2003, but did not sign. In 2004, he was drafted and signed by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Trujillo twirled a one-hitter against Edinburg on Friday, striking out 12 in the Aviators' 3-0 victory.

The Corpus Christi, Texas, native joined the Aviators after spending last season at AA Wichita in the Kansas City organization, where he went 7-10 with a 3.17 ERA in 59 appearances. 2004 was his sixth season in professional baseball, which included four games with the San Diego Padres in 2002. After being signed out of Dallas Baptist University by Johnstown of the Frontier League in 1999, he was sold to San Diego after the season. Trujillo dominated the Midwest League in 2000, saving 42 games with a 1.33 ERA for Fort Wayne.
