LOS ANGELES- The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) held the 2017 NWSL College Draft on Thursday with 40 players being selected over four rounds at the NSCAA Convention in Los Angeles. The Boston Breakers selected Wisconsin midfielder Rose Lavelle with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native and U-23 U.S. international joins current U.S. Women's National Team players Crystal Dunn (2014), Morgan Brian (2015) and Emily Sonnett (2016) as well as UCLA product Zakiya Bywaters (2013) as the top pick in the NWSL College Draft.
Lavelle was the first of four selections made by the Breakers in the first round of the 2017 draft as Boston also picked up Morgan Andrews (USC) at No. 3, Ifeoma Onumonu (CAL) at No. 8 and finally Margaret Purce (Harvard) at No. 9.
The North Carolina Courage began the newest chapter in club history as the team relocates from Western New York ahead of the 2017 season - taking forward Ashley Hatch out of BYU with the No. 2 overall pick.
USC had three players (Andrews, Kayla Mills and Miranda Freeman) taken in the first round as the 2016 NCAA champions became the third school in NWSL history (along with UCLA and Florida State) to have a three of their players selected in the first round of a given draft.
