QMJHL Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League

Commissioner announces review of security protocols

Published on January 23, 2007 under Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release

BOUCHERVILLE, Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - The Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Gilles Courteau, today announced plans to instruct the league's 18 franchises to review their security protocols in order to ensure the safety of players, officials and league personnel at every QMJHL game.

As such, in the coming days, each team will be obligated to present a detailed security plan to the Director of Hockey Operations, Raymond Bolduc, which will be subject to League approval before its implementation.

"The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has made a lot of progress in terms of security over the past few years," declared the Commissioner. "We erected higher protective glass behind the benches and all around the rink, installed protective domes to ensure the safe passage of our officials to their dressing room and increased the number of security staff on hand at each game. Moreover, we've been able to count on the continued support and cooperation of the municipal police in all of our markets. Nevertheless, following the incidents which occurred in Chicoutimi last Friday, we realize that improvements need to be made. More specifically, we'll look at securing the pathway between the players' dressing room and the team bus."

The Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Gilles Courteau, as well as League personnel will not be available for further comment.
