Commentary: NIFL daily buzz

by Jerry Hewitt
May 11, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)

It is so quiet, too quiet. I'm not sure that means all is well in the NIFL or not. Could just mean the quiet before the really big one hits, or they've managed to plug enough leaks in the dam to keep everyone quiet, or maybe the storm has really passed for the season. Guess we shall all wait and see.

Legal wranglings

I see a news report this morning out of Odessa on the NIFL vs. the IFL over Corpus Christi and Odessa pulling the plug on their NIFL season after just one season. Appears that goes to court September 5th of this year. The suit contends the two teams left the NIFL illegally with a year still remaining on their contract. I can sympathize with the reasons they reportedly left for, but if the contract was valid, doesn't say much about the two honoring their obligations.

What I did find funny about the article was no mention of San Angelo and SW Louisiana. Maybe they are free and clear of the legal mess faced by the two others.

I'm not sure the Intense Football League has much of a future anyway, so the NIFL suit may just be a so what. I keep hearing reports of problems with in the system down there, all pointing back to the gentleman who owns two thirds of the league, Chad Dittman. Time will tell if that league survives.

Texas

Texas is a great football market, both for indoor as well as outdoor. I don't think any of the minor leagues are doing justice to the sport down there and I'm including the af2 in that statement as well. I just feel that all the teams down there deserve better than what they are getting.

Well well

We made mention of the Dayton and Big Sky games disappearing from the NIFL schedule yesterday and by the afternoon, both were back on. I wonder if the NIFL was paying attention to the Buzz and decided to do the right thing and play the games as scheduled? Probably not, doing the right thing isn't exactly in their nature.

Dayton did find a new home, an indoor soccer facility with a low roof and what appears to be no seating. Charleston can leave their kicker off the active roster this week as his services won't be needed in the low ceiling venue. Not giving a roster spot to a kicker and going for two after each touchdown seems to be a growing trend in the NIFL anyway.

Now St Joseph at Big Sky. Even though back on the schedule, I'm not 100% sure this game will actually happen. Just a feeling, nothing more.

Whatever happens, happens, but with the two back on the schedule we can add two more semi pro games to the schedule this week.

Semi pro

When I call a game semi pro, it's not referring to the visiting team, but as to how the home team puts on the event. It all has to do with the home team, their professional attitude, their facilities and more and more and more. So, just to qualify, my reference to semi pro is no reflection on the visitor in most cases.

Ex Billings QB shines in debut

Chris Dixon who recently jumped over to the af2 Everett Hawks got his first start Saturday in a 50-40 loss, but Dixon proved he is just as good playing the AFL style of game as he was the indoor variety, Dixon, starting in place of Julian Reese, who was traded to South Georgia earlier in the week, completed 23 of 36 passes for 279 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. Congratulations to Chris on his performance.

UIF to go to Lacrosse?

Report in a Lacrosse paper on the announcement today of a new lacrosse team to play in the Sears Center alluded to maybe a UIF team setting up shop. While in the NIFL, the Lacrosse franchise had a great fan base even though on the field they failed in most games. It's a good market and if the UIF does go there, they should have a winner of the field at least.

Another non eventful, boring day

Sorry folks for the boring article today, but we'' try better tomorrow. By the way, today is the 50th edition of the Daily Buzz.

Fire watch

No one added to our fire watch but the fires are still closing in on Louisiana, burning a little cooler. It would appear that the winds have calmed some, but maybe the calm before an even bigger fire breaks.

Parting notes

Time for a change folks, no question about it, but I wonder if anybody capable of making change is listening. And to maybe call out those who have the power to make a difference, to make the changes needed, I wonder, do you have what it takes to make the right decisions or cower as in years past. Blunt I know, politically correct, maybe not, but exactly as I see it.
