Commentary: NIFL daily buzz

May 9, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)

I went to bed last night with nothing really on tap for this morning. Really had to search the papers this morning for anything to write about and guess what? For the first time in how many weeks, the NIFL leaves me without material. How rude is that? So if you don't want to be bored to death this morning, don't bother reading any further.

Some dribble

From the Fayetteville Arkansas NWArkansas News this morning, some reporter found today equally boring and wrote a little piece on the semi pro Arkansas Stars. Most of the article dealt with going over the original version of the movie, The Longest Yard, where Burt Reynolds makes the statement to the warden that semi pro is a joke.

I'd disagree with the writer about the Stars being semi pro as that was what he was alluding to, but the joke part, well I think I have to agree with him. At least their home game last weekend was anything but professional. But there again, much of this NIFL season has been played in many of the leagues markets in a manner that most would conclude as not being professional.

I did find myself thinking that maybe players associated with the Stars that want to down a few beers out back of the Tyson Events Center before their game as reported by the writer, rethink their dedication to the team. That's just wrong guys. Just because the team you play on and the league they are in do things in a less than professional manner, doesn't mean you have to follow suit. Players in their community are role models and should act like it.

LaMunyon near gone

The lady who single handedly almost ruined football in Montgomery has pretty much dome the same in Chattanooga with the River Sharks. Stories of unpaid players still abound. Even the coach is quoted here and there as the team needing new ownership to survive. Of course the league has vowed to help the Sharks out. Help like Rapid City got maybe?

Wyoming Cavalry ownership

I found this interesting. In the Casper Star Tribune, it was reported that part of the Cavalry were up for sale and the city council needed a vote to approve it. Ok, so what I know, slow morning I told you. But what I found interesting was the people I thought owned the team actually only own 6.4% of it.

The city owns 26.9 percent of Casper Professional Football, Z-Holdings would own 53.8 percent and Alpha Development Corporation owns 6.4 percent. Income-only holders include Mike and Argeri Layton with 5.1 percent and Carrol Orrison with 7.7 percent.

Go away Crow

In a commentary out of Fargo, North Dakota the writer tells the UIF not to bother, as indoor football won't work in Fargo. Everything else has failed according to the writer, so he suggests the UIF not even bother trying. If the rest of the community feels that way, I'd have to agree it's a bad move. I believe Fargo is a few years from happening anyway, so another writer found today slow as well I think.

Games

Week ten has some pretty good math ups. Even the dog games look to have interest from a competitive point of view.. The 0-7 teams all have a shot at winning this weekend. 0-7 St Joseph plays 0-7 Big Sky, so one of these two will break into the winning column. 0-7 Twin City is at 2-5 Arkansas and have a good shot at pulling off a win there, if the game is played that is. Remember St Joe came close to knocking off the Stars and that was the better Stars, not the joke that played this last weekend. Both games should be good, at least all four are pretty equal on the field.

Two super games appear on the schedule also, Billings at Wyoming and Tr-Cities at Rapid City. In their first game of the season the Outlaws handed the Cavs a very embarrassing loss, but that was the road team. The home team plays a much better game and the Outlaws will have to play better than they did against the Fever two weeks ago if they want a win in Casper. The Fever also have their hands full in taking on 7-0 Rapid City. This could be a very good game or a blow out. It certainly will tell us how good the Aces really are. In their only other two games against quality opponents, the Aces have easily prevailed. Those games against Wyoming and Katy. Last season the Fever played the majic led Everett Hawks tough in three games, losing twice during the regular season and winning in the playoffs, spoiling the unbeaten Hawks chances of a perfect season. Not sure the Fever can spoil the Aces dream this season, but I know they will certainly try.

Lakeland is 7-0 and Florida is 1-4. Usually a game like this wouldn't grab my attention as a game worth watching. I mean 7-0 versus 1-4? But I have a feeling the 'Bolts record might end up with a loss this week.

If

If you've got this far and are crying about how boring today's article is, well not like I didn't warn you. But I won't put you through anymore as I'm done now.

Fire watch

No one added to our fire watch but the fires are still closing in on Louisiana, burning a little cooler. It would appear that the winds have calmed some, but maybe the calm before an even bigger fire breaks.
