Commandos Look For Back-To-Back Championships

Tyler Sheehan tied a Continental Indoor Football League record with nine touchdown passes, leading the Cincinnati Commandos (11-0) into the 2011 CIFL Championship Game with a 71-13 win against the Chicago Knights (4-7) Friday night in a playoff game at the Cincinnati Gardens.

The Commandos will host the CIFL Championship game next Saturday night, June 11 at 7:35 p.m. Cincinnati will face the winner of Monday night's semifinal game between the Dayton Silverbacks (5-5) and the Marion Blue Racers (8-2) in Marion.

Cincinnati, the defending CIFL champions, is attempting to become the first franchise in CIFL history to win two titles.

Cincinnati scored touchdowns on all seven of its possessions in the first half to lead 48-13 by halftime. Sheehan accounted for six of those first-half touchdowns, then went on to tie the league record with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Barnett with 8:08 remaining in the game.

Sheehan appeared to have set the record with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Nez Mincy later in the quarter, but the play was nullified by a penalty. Sheehan finished 17 for 27 for 194 yards with no interceptions and the nine touchdowns to five different receivers.

Barnett led the receiving corps with six catches for 89 yards, scoring twice. Mincy had four catches for 32 yards with three touchdown. Both of Derrick Moss' catches resulted in touchdowns, with Brandon Boehm and Shawn McGarity hauling in one touchdown each.

Moss led the Commandos on the ground with 36 yards on eight carries, including Cincinnati's only rushing touchdown of the game.

In all, Cincinnati outgained Chicago, 261 yards to 128, and forced five Chicago turnovers while committing none themselves.

Corry Stewart picked off three passes and recorded three tackles to lead the defense while Jeff Franklin and Thomas Claggett recovered fumbles for the Commandos. Wendell Brown recorded a team-high 4.5 tackles, with Pernell Phillips and Terrill Byrd recording one sack each.
