Cincinnati Commandos News Release
The Cincinnati Commandos kept their winning streak intact Saturday night after defeating the Chicago Cardinals 62-22 at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Villa Park, Ill.
After jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, the outcome was never in doubt for the Commandos, who are now 6-0 on the season.
Fresh off CIFL Offensive Player of the Week honors, Commandos QB Ben Mauk threw seven touchdowns. Mauk, who finished the game 24-30 for a career-high 238 yards and two interceptions, now has 34 touchdown passes on the year.
Cincinnati WR Dominick Goodman, the CIFL's leading receiver, had eight catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Goodman's counterpart, WR Robert Redd, also had two TD receptions.
As good as the Commando offense was, the defense was arguably better. The CIFL's No. 1 ranked unit forced eight Chicago turnovers - four apiece on interceptions and fumbles - and surrendered only 121 net yards.
CIFL sack leader, Commandos DE James Spikes, added two more QB takedowns to his total and now has 11 on the year, while LB Clayton Mullins, the CIFL's leading tackler, added a sack of his own to go along with 7.5 total tackles.
The newest Commando, DB EJ Underwood, started his Cincinnati career off with a bang when he intercepted Cardinals QB Will Ducey and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown with 19 seconds left in the second quarter, giving the Commandos a 28-7 halftime lead. Underwood picked off Ducey again in the third quarter.
Commandos DB Chris Respress capped off the scoring by intercepting Ducey at the Commandos goal line and returning it 50 yards for a score with 4:18 left in the game.
Kicker Travis Johnson, who missed last week's game to injury, made eight of nine extra point kicks. In his absence last week, Cincinnati went only two for nine on two-point conversion attempts.
The Commandos return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 when they visit the Marion Mayhem at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
