Comets Win Second Straight in Record-Setting Fashion

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Cleveland Comets set two franchise records in beating the Beijing Shougang Eagles at Embry Riddle Softball Stadium on Saturday, 11-3.

The Comets, who recorded their second straight victory and third in five games, knocked out a franchise-record 13 hits and also set a new club record for runs scored in a single game.

"Overall, I think everyone is working hard to get better every pitch and their hard work is paying off," said Cleveland coach Charlotte Morgan. "I've talked to them about not getting defeated after one pitch, one at-bat, or one play. Use it to get better and for their next opportunity. We want them to celebrate the little things and you can see the team coming together as well."

After opening the season with nine straight losses, the Comets won back-to-back games for the first time this season and they did so with a potent offense.

In Friday's 4-0 win over the Eagles, Cleveland collected seven hits including two home runs and three doubles.

Chloe Miller's second-inning home run-her second in as many games-gave the Comets an early 1-0 lead. That advantage was short-lived as Xu Jia hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to tie it.

Cleveland took the lead for good in the top of the third on two hits.

Shellie Robinson singled and stole second and Alexa Peterson was hit by a pitch. Jade Rhodes then singled and Robinson scored on an error. Peterson then stole home to give the Comets a 3-1 lead.

Comets starter Devin Brown pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the third to keep Cleveland out in front. Brown, who allowed one earned run on five hits in three innings, was credited with the win.

"The win was definitely a team effort and it means a lot that we are starting to put it all together and get these wins," Brown said.

Ping Fan allowed two runs-just one of them earned-in 1 1/3 innings and Randi Rupp struck out four in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Cleveland exploded for five runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh to finish off the Eagles.

Robinson finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in to claim the Vaultz Lock It Up Player of the Game award and Lu Yao was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Yao is now batting .333 on the year.

"Having a strong mentality and not thinking too much when I come to bat is a huge help for me to push through it," Lu Yao said of the challenge of her rookie season.

Rhodes finished with a pair of hits for the Comets and Xie Yue, Peterson, Liu Feifei, Jiang Xinyue, and Yuan Huaining also recorded hits in the win.

Chen Jia led the Eagles with a pair of hits.

The Comets, who improved to 3-11, close out their series with Beijing on Sunday.
