Comets Surge Past Wings
January 7, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Byron Alvarez had his second four-goal game in as many outings to lead the Missouri Comets to a 24-11 victory against the Wichita Wings on Sunday evening at the Independence Events Center, helping his side solidify third place in the MISL standings. John Sosa and Stefan St. Louis also helped the Comets to victory, as they scored seven consecutive goals to pull away from the Wings in the second half.
Missouri opened the scoring a little more than a minute into the game, Brian Harris striking from 3-point range. The Wings were able to take advantage twice on the power play, both goals coming from Geison, before Tiguinho's 3-point effort made it 7-3 late in the first quarter. Missouri hit back, Sosa scoring his first before providing the assist on Stefan Stokic's goal to make it 7-7, but the Wings regained the lead shortly after when Geison completed his hat trick to make it 9-7.
From then on, however, the Comets took over. Sosa's second tied the game again before Alvarez struck for the first time, from 3-point range. St. Louis then added his first goal in the MISL to make it 14-9 at the halftime break before Alvarez and Harris scored 22 seconds apart early in the third quarter to make it a nine-point game.
Wichita's night then got worse as Geison was ejected, and Lucas Rodriguez made it 20-9 at the end of the third quarter with a low strike. Alvarez then capped a fine solo performance with a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, Wichita's Frederico Moojen pulling back a consolation goal between the two, to move the former league MVP into a tie with Rochester's Doug Miller with 25 goals this season.
FRIDAY
CHICAGO 11, SYRACUSE 0: Jeff Richey set a record for saves in a single game in the MISL's current era, recording 45 stops as he posted the league's first shutout in two years for the Chicago Soul as they defeated the Syracuse Silver Knights at the Sears Centre Arena.
The Soul got on the board early in the first quarter, Bato Radoncic finding the back of the net for a 2-0 lead, and Eric Lukin doubled the advantage just more than two minutes before the end of the quarter, with the Soul carrying the 4-0 lead to the halftime break. At the other end, Richey was outstanding, making 22 stops in the first half to keep his side on top as it was outshot 48-18 in the game.
Chicago then struck quickly in the third quarter, Matt Stewart scoring 34 seconds after the break to make the score 6-0, and while Syracuse continued to carry the majority of the play, it was unable to find a way past Richey, who raised his save percentage to .728. Fourth-quarter goals by Carlos Muñoz and Carlos Farias, from 3-point range, capped the scoring for Chicago.
The shutout was the first in the MISL since March 4, 2011 when the Milwaukee Wave's Marcel Feenstra shut out the Omaha Vipers in a 21-0 Wave win. The performance also bettered Norfolk Sharx's goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman's 38-save performance last season, also against the Silver Knights.
BALTIMORE 23, ROCHESTER 12: The Baltimore Blast used a four-goal run in the third quarter to pull away from the Rochester Lancers at 1st Mariner Arena on Friday night as Max Ferdinand had a hat trick and Mike Lookingland four assists to lead their side to victory.
Ferdinand opened the scoring, finishing a well-worked restart, but the Lancers hit back to take the lead before the end of the first quarter as Mauricio Salles and Jeremy Ortiz made it 4-2. Baltimore took control in the second quarter, however, with Lookingland tying the game 1:05 in before Ferdinand's second and a goal by Lucas Roque, both assisted by Lookingland, made it 8-4 at the halftime break.
Rochester hit back to start the second half, with Elliott Fauske and Salles tying the game 8-8, but then the Blast put on an outstanding run of play, scoring four goals in the final 5:01 of the quarter to take a 17-8 lead. Roque began the run, and Machel Millwood scored a second a little more than a minute later to make it 12-8. Lucio Gonzaga then struck from 3-point range before Millwood's second with 57 seconds to play in the quarter capped the scoring run.
Rochester twice cut the deficit to seven points, Alan McGreal and Rey Martinez each scoring around Ferdinand's third of the game, but the Blast were able to pull away late on as Ptah Myers scored on his 200th appearance in the MISL before Adauto Neto capped the scoring with 45 seconds to play.
SATURDAY
MILWAUKEE 13, SYRACUSE 10: For the second consecutive meeting, the Milwaukee Wave had to rally past the Syracuse Silver Knights, taking their eighth consecutive victory to remain within striking distance of the Baltimore Blast at the top of the MISL standings with victory at U.S. Cellular Arena. Luan Oliveira had the decisive goal, while Marcio Leite had four assists as the Wave took victory.
In a tight first quarter, the Silver Knights got on the board on the power play as Bryan Perez tucked home Slavisa Ubiparipovic's ball from close range. Syracuse doubled its lead through Neto early in the second quarter, and while the Wave were able to get a goal back through Hewerton midway through the quarter, the Silver Knights went to the break up by four after Bozidar Jelovac found the back of the net.
The Silver Knights added to their lead early in the third quarter as JD Gruenewald finished off a breakaway to make the score 8-2, but then the Wave began to build pressure on the Syracuse goal, and they finally broke through with 3:24 to play in the period, Tenzin Rampa finishing after a fine pass by Leite. Nick Perera added another goal 65 seconds later, cutting the deficit to two going to the fourth quarter.
Hewerton's second goal of the game, off a turnover, tied the game 2:23 into the fourth quarter before Oliviera struck from 3-point range to give the Wave their first lead of the game just more than five minutes in. While Syracuse was able to get within a point, Bryan Perez scoring his second power play goal of the night midway through the quarter, the Wave were quickly able to restore their three-point lead as Marcelo Fontana scored 64 seconds later, with Milwaukee able to see out the remainder of the contest.
BALTIMORE 15, ROCHESTER 5: The Baltimore Blast completed a weekend sweep of the Rochester Lancers at 1st Mariner Arena as Machel Millwood had a five-point night to lead his side to victory. The Lancers, who were without MISL leading scorer Doug Miller (fever), fell to their fifth consecutive defeat.
The Lancer held the lead at the end of the first quarter, however, as Mauricio Salles struck from 3-point range off a restart to give his side the early advantage. The two teams then went back and forth in the second quarter, J.T. Noone scoring back-to-back goals to give the Blast a 4-3 lead before Rey Martinez pulled the Lancers back in front with 5:19 to play in the half.
Baltimore took the lead for good with 3:17 to play in the second quarter as Lucas Roque found the back of the net, and Millwood then scored his first for the only goal of the third quarter to give the Blast an 8-5 advantage.
Millwood then struck from 3-point range on a power play chance early in the fourth quarter, and the Blast added a pair of goals late against the sixth attacker through Tony Donatelli and Lucio Gonzaga to cap the scoring.
