Comets Split Doubleheader with Aussie Spirit

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Cleveland Comets closed out a six-game series against the Aussie Spirit with a doubleheader split on Friday.

Cleveland won the first game, 3-2, then fell to the Spirit in the nightcap, 7-0.

Shellie Robinson led the Comets in game one. She finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, three runs batted in, a double and a home run to earn the Vaultz Lock It Up Player of the Game award.

Chloe Miller, Liu Feifei, Jade Rhodes, Xie Yue, and Yuan Huaining also had hits for the Comets, who improved to 7-0 when outhitting their opponents.

Miller singled to open the third and Robinson followed with her fifth homer of the season.

The Spirit responded with a run in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to tie it but Robinson delivered an RBI double in the sixth to provide the decisive run.

Rookie Randi Rupp picked up her second win of the season after relieving starter Gretchen Aucoin in the fifth. Rupp allowed just two hits and struck out one in three shutout innings. Aucoin allowed two earned runs and struck out six in her start.

The Spirit dominated the second game.

Aussie scored single runs in the first and second innings then made it 4-0 with a two-run third. The Spirit put it out of reach with three runs in the sixth.

Verity Long, Stacey Porter, Jade Wall, and Rachel Lack each had two hits in the win. Jordan Taylor, the Vaultz Lock It Up Player of the Game in the nightcap, struck out 10 Comets in her complete game victory.

Rhodes and Jiang Xinyue both had two hits for the Comets.

The loss snapped Cleveland's three-game winning streak.

Cleveland will host the Aussie Spirit in a three-game series at Akron's Firestone Stadium beginning on Tuesday, July 3. The Comets haven't played a home game since back on June 9.
