Gary, Ind. - The West couldn't overcome a 24-point halftime deficit as they lost to the East, 140-119, in the 2008 International Basketball League All-Star Game at the Genesis Center in Gary, Indiana on Thursday.
The West came out of the game ice cold, shooting just 33 percent from the floor in the first quarter, and managed just one three-point shot in the entire first half. That shot came as the first quarter expired to make the score 33-21 in favor of the East.
The East poured it on to start the second quarter, scoring the period's first 13 points to extend their lead to 25, at 46-21. The West was able to stop the bleeding but was unable to chip into the deficit as they trailed 69-45 at halftime.
In the third quarter the West was able to trim the margin to 14 with 4:05 left to play, but the East responded with a 14-3 run to push their advantage back to 25.
The Slam's Tyler Amaya helped key the West's comeback attempt in the middle stages of the fourth quarter, netting four assists in the quarter to go along with a three-pointer and an alley-oop dunk. Twice the West trimmed the lead to 10 with under six minutes to play, but after the West made the score 117-107 on a Zach Ramey trey, the East responded with nine straight points to put the game out of reach.
The Gary Steelheads' Royce Parran netted a triple-double with 30 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to earn Most Valuable Player honors.
Shon Williams of the Portland Chinooks led the West with 17 points, while Amaya posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Slam's other representatives in the game, Ryan Diggs and Jacob Stevenson, scored seven and four points, respectively.
The Slam players and coach Ridnour will now re-join the team in Vancouver as they face the Volcanoes in a critical West Division match-up on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Clark College.
