SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - 2009 Tennessee Smokies OF Tyler Colvin was called up by the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and will be accompanying the Cubs in Milwaukee for the team's series against the Brewers that begins Monday night. The call-up will mark Colvin's first stint in the major leagues and comes on the heels of the completion of the Southern League Championship Series this past weekend.
The 2009 season was a very successful one for Colvin. The Clemson University star hit .300 in 84 games for Tennessee this year, with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs. Colvin twice won the Southern League's Hitter of the Week award (August 3 and 31) and was named as the Topps' Player of the Month in the month of August in the Southern League.
Before arriving to the Smokies on May 31 this year, Colvin hit .250 in 32 games for the High-A Daytona Cubs. Colvin was a mainstay on the Smokies in 2008, hitting .256 with 14 home runs, 80 RBIs and a Southern League-leading 11 triples. He also split time between Tennessee and Daytona in 2007, helping the Smokies
Overall, the 2009 season was Colvin's third with the Smokies and fourth in the minors. The Augusta, Ga. native was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round (13th overall) of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
