Columbus Lions win over Ghostriders
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Gene Davis kicked a 34-yard field goal with 5.3 seconds remaining as the Columbus Lions defeated the Osceola Ghostriders 34-31 in a World Indoor Football League game Saturday, March 10 before 2,467 at AFLAC Field in the Columbus Civic Center.
Davis, a former Georgia Southern star, connected on two field goals and made all four point after attempts as the Lions (2-0) took the early in the WIFL Standings. In four games so far this season, the margin of victory has been three points or less.
Osceola (1-1) rallied from a 17-3 third quarter deficit to take a 23-17 lead. on Brandon Sumner's 2-yard keeper with 5:06 left. Columbus regained the lead at 24-23 on Andrew McKay's 14-yarder to Jawarski Pollock five minutes later, then increased its lead to 31-23 on linebacker Justin Rivers' second fumble recovery and return for a touchdown with 1:15 left.
The Ghostriders tied it again at 31-31 on Sumner's 23-yarder to Luther Huggins and a Sumner two-pointer with 25 seconds to play.
McKay finished with 107 yards and two touchdown passes for the Lions with Silas Daniels catching five passes with 58 yards.
Torrence Buntting rushed for 59 yards and two touchdowns for the Ghostriders. Sumner had 131 yards and one touchdown pass, with James Panui posting a game-high seven catches for 70 yards.
Game MVPs were Pollock (offense), Rivers (defense), Steven Davis (lineman) and Davis (special teams).
The Lions received 226 "style points" from a committee of fans and media, while Osceola received 89.
The next WIFL game will be March 18 when the Ghostriders host the Daytona Beach Thunder (0-2) at 4 p.m.
