Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery defender Colin Falvey has been named USL PRO Defender of the Year. Falvey enjoyed a superb season with the Battery in 2013 leading Charleston to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and to the semifinals of the USL PRO playoffs.
"I'm very proud and honored to win this award," said Colin Falvey. "It would not have been possible without the support of my family, the Battery fans and the great staff we have at this Club."
Falvey marshaled a Battery defense that allowed just 29 goals all season. At Blackbaud Stadium the Battery were particularly stingy allowing only 12 goals in 16 games played (includes USL PRO regular season, post-season and U.S. Open Cup).
Named the team's Most Valuable Player, Falvey appeared in every game of the season, missing just 34 minutes of action, while also scoring three goals and adding an assist. Falvey scored the game-winning goal in the Battery's victory against defending MLS Supporter's Shield holder the San Jose Earthquakes in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser said "I think Colin winning Defender of the Year is a very well deserved award, he has worked very hard for the club and his teammates. It is nice to see him recognized for all of his effort and hard work this season."
A native of Cork, Ireland, Falvey has played the Charleston Battery for four years and has been Club captain for the past two seasons. Falvey's career totals now include 104 games played with five goals and three assists. Falvey has won two USL championships with the Battery (2010, 2012).
Falvey previously played professionally for New Zealand's YoungHeart Manawatu, Cobh Ramblers and Kilkenny City in the League of Ireland and in the US with the Wilmington Hammerheads.
