Clune named OHL Scholastic Player of the Year

Toronto - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Richard Clune of the Sarnia Sting is the 2004-05 Bobby Smith Trophy winner as the OHL's Scholastic Player of the Year.
Clune, an 17-year-old native of Toronto, maintained an 80% average in a full course load at Northern Collegiate in Sarnia that included English, science and kinesiology. He took three University Prep Level courses and earned 90% + marks in two courses and 80% + marks in four courses during the school year.
On the ice, the second year forward scored 21 goals and was third in team scoring with 34 points in 67 games. A second round pick of the Sting in 2003, Clune also helped Canada win the gold medal at the Under-18 Championships last August and won a silver medal with Canada's Under-18 Team at the World Championships in April.
The trophy, which honours Bobby Smith, a former Ottawa 67's star, is symbolic of the high standard of excellence that Smith displayed on the ice, as well as in the classroom, during his outstanding junior career. Each team's nominee for the award becomes a member of the OHL Scholastic Team.
The Ontario Hockey League Scholastic Player of the Year is selected by a committee of OHL Educational Consultants who assesses each nominee's academic achievements and Frank Bonello, Director of National Hockey League Central Scouting, who evaluates each nominee's hockey ability.
Previous winners of the Bobby Smith Trophy include Dave Gagner (Brantford Alexanders), Boyd Devereaux (Kitchener Rangers) and Dustin Brown of the Guelph Storm, who won the trophy an unprecedented three consecutive times.
