Cleveland Comets News Release

The Cleveland Comets used the 20th pick in the 2018 National Professional Fastpitch draft to select University of South Alabama pitcher Devin Brown, who officially began her professional softball career on Tuesday by signing a two-year contract with the club.

"Adding a pitcher with a talent like Devin is an immediate boost to your staff," said Comets general manager Stephen Dunn. "She is a great competitor and has some really good stuff. We plan on using her quite often this year and we are excited to have her signed for multiple years."

Brown, a 5-foot-7 Mobile, Ala., native, closed out her senior season at South Alabama with an 18-16 record and a 2.03 earned run average. She allowed just 66 earned runs and struck out 231 batters in 227 2/3 innings of work and recorded seven double-digit strikeout games in 2018 with a high of 16 against Appalachian State.

A three-time first team All-Sun Belt Conference honoree, Brown also ranks first at South Alabama with most career strikeouts per seven innings (9.71), and second with a career opponent batting average of .174, 701 career strikeouts and 26 career shutouts.

Brown ended her collegiate career with a record of 69-40 and 932 strikeouts in 733 innings pitched.

She became the fourth South Alabama player to be drafted into the NPF, joining Hannah Campbell (3rd overall - 2014 - Akron Racers), Farish Beard (33rd overall - Dallas Charge - 2015) and Emily Messer (31st overall - Akron Racers - 2016).

"There were only 24 picks in this year's draft and I was really worried about whether or not I would be selected," Brown said. "There are some really amazing players in this year's graduating class. Whenever I did hear my name called though, I was really excited."

Early in her senior season, Brown was named to USA Softball's Top 50 "Watch List" for the 2018 Collegiate Player of the Year award and was one of 30 candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award.

The Comets will open the season on May 31 against the Chicago Bandits at the Ballpark in Rosemont (Ill.).
