Cleveland Comets News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Xie Yue's seventh inning RBI triple led the Cleveland Comets to a 5-4 win over the host Beijing Shougang Eagles at Embry Riddle Softball Stadium on Sunday.
The win was the third straight for the Comets and helped the club record its first series win in franchise history. Cleveland closed out the six-game series against the Eagles with a 4-2 record.
Cleveland came from behind to win for just the second time this season.
Beijing scored two runs in the bottom of the third off starter Gretchen Aucoin on two hits.
Liu Li Li started the rally with a bunt single and scored on Veronica Draper's double to left. Draper then scored on a fielder's choice.
The Eagles added another in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Ren Min and an error.
Shellie Robinson's third home run of the season tied the game in the top of the fifth.
Chloe Miller started things off for the Comets with a single to right and Jiang Xinyue also singled. Robinson hit a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left field. It was her first home run since June 6.
Beijing recaptured the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a leadoff single by Draper, who scored on Xi Kailin's single.
Jade Rhodes reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth and Lu Yao beat out an infield single to put runners on first and second with one out. Miller then drew a walk and Rhodes would score on a wild pitch to again tie the game at 4-4.
It stayed that way until the top of the seventh when Yuan Huaining, who made a great defensive play out in left field in the bottom of the sixth, hit a flare over shortstop and scored on Xie Yue's one-out triple to left.
Randi Rupp, who entered the game with one-out in the fifth, set the Eagles down in order in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the Cleveland win.
Rupp did not allow a hit and struck out two in picking up her first win of the season and her career.
Robinson led the Comets with two hits and knocked in three runs. Xie Yue earned the Vaultz Lock It Up Player of the Game award for her game-winning RBI in the seventh.
Cleveland improved to 4-11 while Beijing dropped to 11-11. The Comets travel to Viera, Fla., on Monday where they'll open a four-game series against the USSSA Pride.
