Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
HOUSTON, Texas - Former Corpus Christi manager Dave Clark has been named the interim manager of the Houston Astros in the wake of today's announcement that Cecil Cooper has been relieved of his managerial duties.
Clark, 47, managed the Hooks from 2005 through 2007, leading Corpus Christi to the Texas League Championship in 2006. Last year, Clark managed the Triple-A Round Rock Express, and this year joined the Astros as the club's third-base coach.
In his six seasons as a manager in the minor leagues, including two in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization (2003-2004), Clark's teams compiled a 432-405 record for a .516 winning percentage. In addition to his 2006 title with the Hooks, Clark guided the Hickory Crawdads to the South Atlantic League Championship in 2004. He also led the North Shore Honu to the Hawaiian Winter League crown in 2006.
Clark has been selected as a Manager of the Year twice, in the Carolina League with Lynchburg in 2003 and in the Texas League with the Hooks in 2006.
The 2006 campaign proved to be a banner year for Clark. In addition to the accomplishments listed above, Clark also guided the South Division All-Stars to a 1-0 victory over the North in the Texas League All-Star Game. He also served that season as a coach for the World Team in the XM Satellite Radio Futures Game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
Clark manages his first Major League game tonight as the Astros open a three-game series at Minute Maid Park against the St. Louis Cardinals. Including tonight's game, the Astros have 13 games remaining this season.
Clark will be replaced at third base by Al Pedrique, the Astros minor league field coordinator. Pedrique will resume his field coordinator duties after the season.
Cooper, 59, had been manager of the Astros since August 27, 2007. In his tenure, Cooper compiled a 171-170 record, including this year's mark of 70-79 through Sunday.
The Astros are conducting a press conference at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon at Minute Maid Park to make the announcement regarding Cooper and Clark.
Astros General Manager Ed Wade says that a full search for a new manager will be conducted in the off-season and that Clark is considered a candidate.
