Cleveland City Stars News Release
Wilder, KY - The Cleveland City Stars continue to stay undefeated in their inaugural professional soccer season, as the team showed real spirit and character in the 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Kings earlier tonight. It was the first time that the team had to come back from a 1-0 deficit at half-time.
Two goals within three minutes of each other by the latest City Stars addition, forward Nigel Codrington were enough to send the Cincinnati Kings to defeat, 2-1, in USL Second Division action at the Town and Country Sports Complex.
The Kings had the lead at the half, thanks to a beautiful free kick in the 42nd minute from Kwame Sarkodie. But the Cleveland City Stars came back in the second half and redoubled their efforts. This was rewarded in the 69th minute, first on a goal by Codrington (assist from Adam Moffat), then the second by Codrington in the 72nd minute with the assist from CCS Defender Mark Schulte.
"Nine out of nine points after three games on the road - We truly could have not hoped for a better start into the first season. Now, we are even more excited to present this wonderful team to our home crowed in Cleveland next Saturday." commented Cleveland´s General Manager, Mark Geissbauer after the game.
This loss drops the Kings Season record to 1-3-1, while the win keeps the Cleveland City Stars undefeated with a 3-0-0 record. Cleveland won against the Kings by the same 2-1 score at their last match at the end of April.
Due to the win, the Cleveland City Stars are now the first team in the USL Division 2 that have qualified for the US Lamar Hunt Open Cup.
