Cleveland City Stars News Release
The Cleveland City Stars are preparing this week for their second home match of the season this Saturday, May 9th at 7 p.m. when they will take on the Portland Timbers. The Timbers are the former club of head coach Rod Underwood.
Underwood served as the Timbers assistant coach for the past two years under head coach Gavin Wilkinson. The two worked together over the two seasons to clinch a 21-18-19 overall record, and made the 2007 playoffs.
In time for this weekend's match, the City Stars have added forward Leo Gibson and midfielder John Michael Hayden. Gibson comes to the City Stars after being transferred from the Minnesota Thunder and Hayden comes to Cleveland on loan from the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. Both will be in uniform Saturday.
The City Stars have had a rocky beginning to their season, with a 0-3 record after the team's 3-0 loss to the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday. Ricardo Pierre-Louis remains the team's only goal-scorer, with Pato Aguilera registering the assist in the season opener against Miami FC.
Currently in 8th place in USL-1, the Timbers have secured four points and a 1-1-1 record. After losing the season opener to the Vancouver Whitecaps, the Timbers rallied to tie and win against the Carolina Railhawks in a two-game series last week. The Timbers were led to victory in the second match by midfielders Brian Farber and Ryan Pore who registered the team's only two goals of the season.
Saturday's match will be broadcast locally on SportsTime Ohio. The match will premier Saturday at 10:30 p.m., just after the Cleveland Indians game, and will be replayed Sunday at 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday May 12th at 12 p.m.
The match will be themed as a Mother's Day celebration, with "Soccer Mom Night" featuring free manicures, massages, goodie bags and other treats for all moms in attendance. The top five moms of the Bally Total Fitness Mom of the Year contest will be honored, and the winner of the competition will be announced at halftime. The first 150 fans in the stadium will also receive free Chick-fil-A mini cows.
Tickets are still available by calling 330-425-2003 or visiting clevelandcitystars.com.
The City Stars next match will take place on the road against the Minnesota Thunder on Saturday May 16th at 8:05 p.m. and can be viewed live on USLlive.com. The City Stars return home on Friday May 22nd at 8 p.m. to take on the Carolina Railhawks, the new club of former City Stars head coach Martin Rennie in a nationally televised Fox Soccer Channel broadcast.
