City Islanders Wrap Up First Day of Tryouts

January 6, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release

Lancaster, PA – On Tuesday, the Harrisburg City Islanders completed the first day of their open tryouts, held at the LANCO Fieldhouse in East Petersburg. The Islanders will conclude the tryouts on Wednesday, January 7, with drills running approximately from 9:00 a.m. through noon.

Over 50 trialists participated in Tuesday's drills, presided over by Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. Many of the hopefuls were local products, representing a host of regional high schools (Cedar Cliff, Cumberland Valley, Harrisburg, Red Land, Hempfield) and colleges (York, Elizabethtown, Bloomsburg, Millersville, Kutztown, Messiah), though participants from such places as Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Morocco were in attendance.

Also on hand were Mike Henning, signed by the club on December 23, and prominent local soccer personalities such as Richard Chinapoo, Bob Lilley, and Mark Pulisic, who assisted with the evaluation process.

"We appreciate the turnout we saw today," said Becher. "It was great to get out on the pitch and watch some truly talented players. In the coming weeks, we'll have some tough decisions to make as we continue to shape our roster."

The Harrisburg City Islanders will enter their first season of play in the outdoor Pro Soccer League (PSL), a division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), in April of 2004, with home games at the Skyline Sports Complex on City Island.
