Penn FC News Release

Sumed Ibrahim registered a goal and an assist as the Harrisburg City Islanders downed the Northern Virginia Royals 3-0 at Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday night, snapping a three-game losing streak. The win greatly improved Harrisburg's chances of qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup (see below).

The 24-year-old Sumed scored Harrisburg's first goal in the 28th minute when he swerved through the Royals defense and slipped a right-footed shot past Northern Virginia keeper Alexander Hall. He added an assist on Mo Oduor's goal in the 78th minute, the final score of the night.

Rookie forward Bernie Showers, a native of Fredericksburg and product of Northern Lebanon High School, added his first professional goal on a penalty kick in the 75th minute. Goalkeeper Dave Kern had to make only two saves in his first start, and win, of the season.

ODDS AND ENDS...

- Courtesy of the Dauphin County Executive Commission on Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco (DCDAT), a free ticket is available to area youth for the City Islanders' home game on Saturday, June 4, against the Cincinnati Kings. For more information, visit www.cityislanders.com or call 717-441-GOAL.

- Harrisburg's 33 shots in Saturday's game were easily a team record. The previous mark was 20. Shane Crawford, Sumed Ibrahim, Mo Oduor, and David Schofield combined for 24 shots against the Royals. Cumulatively, Harrisburg has now outshot its opposition 104-64, but been outscored 10-6.

- Oduor has already scored more goals (two) and points (four) than he did in all of 2004 (one goal, three points).

- In Harrisburg's six games this season, five penalty kicks have been awarded (two to Harrisburg). In the City Islanders' 20 games last season, referees called a total of six p.k.'s.

- Rookie defender Dustin Bixler remains the last City Islander to have played every minute (540) of the 2005 season.

- City Islanders Head Coach and Team Captain Derek Potteiger will join Jared Fogle, the popular SUBWAY spokesperson, in speaking to students at West Hanover Elementary in Harrisburg on Wednesday, May 25. Media are required to confirm their attendance by contacting Beth Cohen at 717-545-7403.

U.S. OPEN CUP QUALIFYING UPDATE...

Harrisburg's win on Saturday greatly improved the team's chances of qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup. At the very least, the City Islanders' situation is crystal clear: for Harrisburg to qualify, the Cincinnati Kings must either defeat or tie the Pittsburgh Riverhounds this Saturday in Cincinnati (7:30 p.m.).

If that happens, the City Islanders would play either an amateur or Premier Development League team on Wednesday, June 15, in the Open Cup's First Round.
