June 23, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release

Harrisburg, PA– Five different players scored goals and Dave Kern recorded his second shutout of the season as the Harrisburg City Islanders rolled past the Northern Virginia Royals 5-0 on Wednesday night at Skyline Sports Complex. With the win, Harrisburg's record moves to 5-4-2 (17 points).

Though the Islanders played last Friday and Saturday and had to deal with injuries to several key players, they controlled play from start to finish against the Royals (1-9-0, three points). The scoring chances started early for the Islanders, and they put one home in the 9th minute, after Matt Tanzini broke past the Royals backline and slid a pass into the slot for the onrushing Pete Shellenberger, who was left with an easy finish.

Just seven minutes later, Keith Costigan put Harrisburg up 2-0 when he curled a free kick around the wall and over Noyes from 25 yards out on the right wing. Harrisburg took that 2-0 edge into halftime.

In the second, the Royals repelled Harrisburg's attacks until the 66th minute, when Shellenberger's low cross from the right wing skipped past Aleks Radovic and his marker to a wide-open Steve Fisher for a simple tap-in.

Harrisburg sealed the win with a pair of late goals, and 71st-minute sub Mike Feniger was involved in both. In the 78th minute, Feniger slid the ball into space for Kyle Swords, who found himself behind the defense and had only to slip it home. And in stoppage time, Feniger raced behind the defense onto a long ball from Costigan, putting a shot past Noyes to the near post.

Notes: Dave Kern had to make only two saves to record his second shutout, the third for Harrisburg, of the season...Keith Costigan, Mike Feniger, and Pete Shellenberger all scored three points (goal, assist) in the game... Goalkeeper Chris Doyle (whose loan period with Harrisburg has ended, resulting in his return to the Charleston Battery) and midfielders Derek Potteiger and Andy Guastaferro were named to the latest PSL Team of the Week...Potteiger sat out his second straight game with a knee injury...The Islanders now head north to face the Westchester Flames on Saturday, June 26. Game time at City Park Stadium in New Rochelle, NY, is 5:30 p.m. Following that game, the Islanders are off until Saturday, July 10, when the South Jersey Barons visit Harrisburg.
