City Islanders Make Final #PlayoffPush this Saturday
September 15, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
Harrisburg, PA - City Islanders FC will wrap up their 2016 home campaign against the Wilmington Hammerheads this Saturday, September 17 at 7 p.m. in their second straight game at Millersburg University.
With only two games remaining on the season City is facing the real possibility of missing out on the USL postseason for the second time in as many seasons. Orlando City B still holds the final spot by five points over City and three points over Wilmington.
Orlando has helped keep the Islanders in the hunt by failing to grab one single win in their last seven games and are currently on a five game losing streak. Like City, Orlando only has two games remaining on their schedule. One win by the Lions would end the Islanders season.
For the Isles, the game against Wilmington is a must win. Both of the remaining games are must wins, but if City loses to the Hammerheads, it might be Wilmington who sneaks into the final playoff spot.
Wilmington took the first game at home between these two Eastern conference opponents by a 3-2 final. The Hammerheads took a very early 2-0 lead before City was able to strike back with two first-half goals of their own from Bobby Warshaw to make the game even going into the half. The Hammerheads broke the 2-2 draw with a goal in the 90th minute to take the three points.
City has had opportunities to make up ground on Orlando City but have only managed one win in their last six matches. They recently fell to New York Red Bulls II by 4-1 final.
If City is going to make the playoffs and then make a run into the postseason, they will need a lot of contribution from the usual suspects like Craig Foster and Jose Barril, but will need contribution from players like Warshaw and Cardel Benbow. Warshaw only has one goal since his two goal performance against Wilmington and Benbow only has scored one since the first game of the season.
While Wilmington has 14 players who have tallied goals on the season, they have relied on the constant scoring from Michael Cox who has 11 goals and two assist on the season.
If City can grab a win against the Hammerheards, they might have a chance to get into the playoffs when they take on FC Montreal in Canada the following weekend on September 24 at 7 p.m.
The Islanders will host their final home match of the season on September 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Pucillo Field. All season tickets will be honored and individual general admission tickets purchased in advance from Clipper Magazine Stadium will be refunded.
Fans will have the option to purchase $5 tickets in advance or at the gate at Millersville University. All Millersville students, staff and faculty will receive free admission in advance.
