Cincinnati Re-Signs Nine
September 7, 2011 - Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL)
Cincinnati Commandos News Release
CINCINNATI - The quest for a third consecutive league championship has begun for the Cincinnati Commandos as they have officially announced the signing of 18 players, including nine that were apart of last season's unbeaten season.
The Commandos will be playing its first season in the Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) after dominating the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) the last two seasons. Cincinnati won championships in both its seasons of existence, compiling a two-year record of 23-1.
Defensive end James Frazier is the only player signed that has been with the Commandos for both seasons. A two-year starter, Frazier was slowed by injuries last season. He played in six games, recording 7.5 tackles. In 2010, he registered 27 tackles and 12 for loss as Cincinnati went 11-1.
Thomas Claggett, a defensive lineman, also returns after recording 34 tackles for Cincinnati a season ago. The other returning players are running back Derrick Moss, receiver Phillip Barnett, kicker Brandon Yingling, receiver Shawn McGarity, along with offensive linemen Richard Bailey, Javon Potter and Richard Deutch.
Key members of Cincinnati's first championship run, James Spikes and E.J. Underwood, also return for 2012. Spikes, who played for Dayton last season, led Cincinnati with 16 sacks in 2010. Underwood came in midseason in 2010 and made an immediate impact to the Commandos secondary. He recorded seven interceptions, taking three back for touchdown, and added a missed field goal for a touchdown in just seven games.
Four of the newly acquired players - Harry McCall (LB), Mike Crawford(DB), Calvin Bini (DB) and Tony Longo (DB) - play defense, while running backs Richard Stokes and Christian Haywood will compete for a roster spot. Ohio State product Maurice Lee was also added to the mix.
The Cincinnati Commandos play their games in the historic Cincinnati Gardens. For more information, visit www.cincinnaticommandos.com. The 2012 season is slated to begin in March, and ticket information will be available as soon as the league schedule is released.
