Cincinnati Commandos News Release

Last week: The first-place Commandos traveled to Illinois and defeated the Chicago Cardinals 62-22, improving their record to 6-0 and becoming the first team to clinch a spot in the CIFL playoffs. For the second-consecutive game, Cincinnati QB Ben Mauk threw seven touchdown passes, two apiece to WRs Dominick Goodman and Robert Redd. The Commandos defense forced eight Cardinals turnovers, including pick-sixes from DBs Chris Respress and EJ Underwood.

Racking ‘em up: The CIFL has recognized at least one Commando with a Player of the Week award every week this season (excluding after the team's April 17 bye week). Below is the list of winners, preceded by the game date for which they were honored.

April 24, QB Ben Mauk, Offensive Player of the Week

April 10, DE James Spikes, Defensive Player of the Week

April 2, DB Robbie Wilson, Defensive Player of the Week and K Travis Johnson, Special Teams Player of the Week

The Last Time: The Commandos defeated the Mayhem 48-19 on March 26 at the Cincinnati Gardens. Mauk accounted for six touchdowns after passing for five scores and rushing for another, and Cincinnati never looked back after jumping out to a 22-0 lead in the first half. The Commandos defense intercepted Marion QB Josh Davis three times and sacked him five times.

Closing in: With 21 team sacks through six games, the Commandos are on pace to finish the regular season with 35. The CIFL record for most sacks by a team in a season is 26, set by the Port Huron Pirates in '06 and '07 ... Another CIFL record the Commandos are threatening to break is team interceptions. They have 19 picks through six games, which puts them on pace to finish the regular season with 31. The '06 Rochester Raiders and the '08 Rock River Raptors own the record for most team interceptions in one season with 28.

Supporting the Troops: In recognition of Armed Forces Day, the next Commandos home game on May 15 has been designated Military Appreciation Night. All military personnel can purchase up to two tickets at half price in advance of gameday with a military ID. Gameday purchases are eligible for a $2 discount on tickets with either a military or student ID. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and the Cincinnati Gardens box office.
