Toronto Lynx News Release

[TORONTO, ON] Toronto Lady Lynx midfielder Amanda Cicchini scored for the Canadian Women's U20 National Team in a 3-2 loss to Nigeria in Canada's opening match at the 2006 FIFA U20 Women's World Championship in Shchelkovo, Russia, just north of Moscow. The goal, in the 71st minute, gave the Canadians a 2-1 lead at the time, but Cynthia Uwak scored in the 82nd minute to level the match. Moments later, in injury time, Uwak headed home a laser cross from Maureen Eke past Canadian keeper Stephanie Labbe to grab the win for the Nigerians. The loss places Canada in last place in Group B, tied with Finland with 0 points. The Finns lost earlier in the day to China, 2-1.

Cicchini was one of three Lady Lynx players to start the match, joined by defender Vonya Beckles and midfielder Loredana Riverso. Canada's next match is on August 20th at 8:00 EDT against Finland and can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet.
