Published on December 9, 2009 under Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
Toronto, ON - The Canadian Hockey League in association with corporate partner Old Dutch Foods is excited to announce that the Oromocto Peewee Eagles from Oromocto, New Brunswick, are the winners of the "Win a Hockey Day with a CHL Team" National Contest.
The Eagles were chosen as winners of the contest from a nomination submitted by the team's Assistant Coach Alan Burden who purchased a specially marked contest bag of Old Dutch Potato Chips from the Burton UltraMar in Burton, NB, just north of Oromocto.
"We are so unbelievably excited to take part in our Hockey Day" said Eagles Assistant Coach Alan Burden. "Everybody deserves a thrill like this and we were fortunate enough to win, I am extremely happy for this great group of kids that always work hard and commit themselves to our team."
The Eagles team includes 17 players aged 11 and 12 with 14 boys and three girls. The team will enjoy their Hockey Day with on-ice drills, skills, and hockey fun with the QMJHL's Moncton Wildcats along with tickets to watch their favourite CHL stars live in action. The team will also receive transportation to and from Moncton complete with accommodations.
"It is such a privilege to be involved in something like this" added Burden. "For some of these kids this is their first opportunity to see a live CHL game and I know they can't wait to jump on the bus and go and meet the Wildcats and learn from some future NHL players."
The Peewee Eagles compete in a small AA league with just six teams based in the military community of Orocmocto. Due to family work commitments, the team annually faces turnover challenges but consistently come together as a group with both French and English speaking players. Their trip to Moncton will be the first bus trip as a group since a hockey tournament played in their Novice year.
Old Dutch Foods invited fans to nominate any hockey team of 6-12 year olds by completing an online entry form including an essay style question outlining why their team deserves an amazing opportunity to spend a day with a CHL team. Contest entrants were also eligible to win one of 42 daily instant win prizes including ten (10) $100 Boston Pizza gift cards, ten (10) Olympus FE-5000 digital cameras, and twenty-two (22) Old Dutch Snack Packs.
The contest was promoted with over five million specially marked packages of Old Dutch Potato Chips found in over 10,000 grocery, convenience, and gas bar retail locations across Canada.
Old Dutch Foods has been a proud corporate partner of the CHL and the three regional leagues; the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, since November, 2008.
