Chijindu Released from Hammerheads

Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads have officially announced they have formally released forward Chukwudi Chijindu from the USL PRO league for the remainder of the 2012 regular season.

Chijindu is traveling to Iceland on behalf of an opportunity for a long-term deal signing for Icelandic side =DEÃ"r Akureyri (Thor AK) until the end of the 2012 season.

"This is a great opportunity that has come along for Chuck," said Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving. "We didn't want to prevent him from doing something great and we hope him all the best."

Thor AK is currently sitting in third place in the Icelandic second division and is fighting for promotion back to the Premier League. The club has played in the Europa League this season and recently beat Irish club Bohemians 5-1. They eventually lost to Czech Premier League team Mlada Boleslav.

The club has also signed two further Americans including former Portland Timbers and D.C. United goalkeeper Josh Wicks and Joe Funicello, formerly of Real Maryland.

During his time with the 2012 Hammerheads, Chijindu appeared in ten matches when he was not recovering from injury mid-season with ten shots on goal and two assists.
