EARLY FIREWORKS IN THE SUNSHINE STATE: The Rush is back on the road this week, kicking off the July 4 holiday weekend by taking on the Tampa Bay Storm at the St. Pete Times Forum this Friday, July 2. The game matches two of the top teams in the league and will be featured as the AFL Game of the Week on the NFL Network.

Chicago enters the game on the heels of a gritty home win over Orlando that extended the team's winning streak to three.

Tampa Bay, on the other hand, had a much easier time last week, hammering the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings 78-39 for its sixth-consecutive victory.

TWO GAME HOMESTAND ON HORIZON: After this week's game in Tampa, the Rush returns home to host Arizona and Dallas in back-to-back weeks Saturday, July 10, and Saturday, July 17. Both games are rematches of Rush road games from earlier in the season - the Rush won in Arizona back in April and defeated Dallas on the road in late May.

RUSH MAGIC NUMBERS DOWN TO 1 & 3: With five weeks and four games to play in the regular season, Chicago's magic number to clinch its ninth-consecutive playoff berth is down to one. Any Rush win or Iowa loss the rest of the way will give the Rush a spot in the 2010 postseason.

Chicago's magic number to clinch the Midwest Division title is three. Any combination of Rush wins and Milwaukee losses totaling three gives Chicago the division title and home field advantage for the opening round of the playoffs on the weekend of August 6.

PLAYOFFS BREAKDOWN: With five weeks left in the regular season, here is a look at how the playoff race is shaping up:

The two division winners in each conference automatically qualify for the playoffs, along with the teams with the next two best records in each conference.

National Conference American Conference

2. x-Chicago 9-3 2. x-Tulsa 7-5

TOUGH STRETCH RUN: Chicago's final four games to close the regular season will come against some of the best teams in the league. If you remove the 1-10 Dallas Vigilantes from the mix, Chicago's other three opponents currently have the three best records in the AFL, combining for an impressive 25-8 record (Tampa Bay 8-3, Arizona 8-3, and Spokane 9-2).

RUSH HOLDS OFF PREDATORS: It wasn't pretty, but the Chicago Rush fought hard and earned its ninth win of the season with a 55-42 win over the Orlando Predators last week at Allstate Arena.

Chicago (9-3) won the battle of the defenses, forcing four turnovers and holding Orlando (5-6) to just 14 second half points.

With the game tied 7-7 early in the first quarter, Rush defensive lineman Joe Peters showed that the focus of the game would be the defenses when he collected his team-leading sixth sack of the year, forcing Predators QB Nick Hill to fumble in the process. The loose ball bounced out of the Predators' end zone for a safety, giving the Rush a two-point lead and the ball.

Chicago took advantage, taking the free kick and scoring when Michna connected with fullback Robert Boss on a 22-yard screen pass that put the Rush up two scores at 16-7.

After the teams traded interceptions, Hill tossed an 11-yard TD strike to Robert Quiroga to get the Predators within 16-14.

The Rush bounced right back, however, as Boss completed the hat trick, rumbling in from the 6-yard line for his third touchdown of the night, making the score 23-14.

After consecutive Orlando touchdowns gave the Preds a 28-23 lead with 43 seconds left in the first half, the Rush got the ball back and marched 29 yards to get in position for a 31-yard field goal as time expired. The kick sent the teams into the half with the score 28-26.

Chicago got the ball to start the second half and quickly regained the lead as Michna connected with Travis LaTendresse on an eight yard score that put the Rush on top 33-28.

After a Predator score made it 35-33, Chris Gould connected on his second field goal try of the night putting the Rush back on top 36-35.

A botched snap on the next Predators possession proved to be the game's final turning point. The fumbled snap was recovered by Rush linebacker Clifton Smith at the Orlando 3-yard line. On the very next play Michna dove into the end zone to give the Rush a 43-35 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The teams again traded touchdowns before a Chris Martin interception and another Gould field goal extended the Rush lead to 53-42.

A second Orlando safety with 25 seconds remaining put the cap on the win for Chicago.

THE SECOND HALF: The Rush reached the season's midway point with a record of 6-2, which at the time was tied for the best record in the AFL with Jacksonville, Milwaukee and Spokane.

Here is a breakdown of Chicago's history in the first and second halves of the season:

2001 4-3 3-4 7-7

2002 4-3 5-2 9-5*

2008 6-2 5-3 11-5*

2010 6-2 3-1 ?

* Central Division champion

OWNING ITS DIVISION: The Rush has a history of playing well within its division, and this season was no different. The Rush finished the year 4-2 in division play., sweeping the season series from Cleveland and splitting its season series with both Iowa and Milwaukee.

In fact, dating back to 2004, the Rush is 32-11 against its Central Division or Midwest Division rivals, including a 6-2 record in 2007, a 6-1 record in 2008, and a 4-2 record this season.

TAKE IT AWAY: With its two interceptions Saturday night vs. Orlando - one each by Nygel Rogers and Chris Martin -, the Rush defense now has intercepted a league-leading 23 passes this season. The team record for interceptions in a season is 24 set in 2007.

SAFETY DANCE: The Rush defense recorded two safeties last week against Orlando. The first came in the first quarter when Joe Peters sacked Preds QB Nick Hill and forced a fumble which bounced out of the back of the end zone. The second came late in the fourth quarter after Chicago took a 53-42 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Orlando's kick returner exited the end zone with the ball before retreating to the end zone to try to avoid a tackle. He was cornered by the Rush defense and tackled for a safety.

NOT MUCH HISTORY TO TAMPA SERIES: Despite being in the league together for nine seasons, the Rush and Tampa Bay Storm have met only three times, with the Rush holding a 2-1 lead in the series.

Here is a look at the most recent game in the Rush-Storm series:

May 5, 2008 - Rush quarterback Russ Michna improved to 5-0 as a starter, completing 18 of 32 passes for 184 yards and four touchdowns. Michna also ran for 35 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Wide receiver Travis LaTendresse was Michna's favorite target, catching nine passes for 98 yards and three touchdowns.

In a see-saw game that was tied 24-24 at the half, the Rush took control in the third quarter, taking the opening kickoff and methodically moving down the field. Michna then capped a 46-yard drive with an eight-yard TD pass to LaTendresse for a 31-24 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, DB Dennison Robinson forced a fumble by Storm return man Sedrick Robinson. The fumble was recovered by Liam Ezekiel for the Rush, giving the offense possession at midfield.

Two plays later, Michna scrambled out of the pocket and ran for a 25-yard touchdown to give Chicago a 37-24 lead.

However, the Storm would not go quietly, cutting the lead to 37-30 when fullback Torrance Marshall scored on a two-yard run.

Chicago had a chance to take a 14-point lead to open the fourth quarter, but linebacker Lawrence Samuels intercepted a Michna pass in the end zone and returned it to the Storm 21-yard line.

Tampa could not fully capitalize on the interception and tie the game. Instead, the Storm was forced to settle for a 19-yard Seth Marler field goal to cut the lead to 37-33 with 9:25 remaining.

One play after a Jonathan Ordway kick return set the Rush up at the Tampa 11-yard line, Damian Harrell caught a pass in corner of the end zone for a TD, giving the Rush a 44-33 lead.

The Storm came right back, cutting the score to 44-39 on another Marshall two-yard run. However, when Marler missed his second extra point of the game, the Rush held on to its five point lead with 2:20 to play.

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the final minutes, with Michna scoring on a six-yard run to put the Rush up 51-39 and Storm wide receiver Robinson catching a five-yard TD pass to reach the final margin.

Here is a look at the Rush-Storm Series Results:

2002: Tampa Bay 66, Rush 53 (May 10 @ Tampa)

2004: Rush 51, Tampa Bay 36 (April 11@ Chicago)

2008: Rush 51, Tampa Bay 46 (May 5 @ Tampa)

300+ VICTORIES ON THE SIDELINES: This week's Rush-Storm game matches two of the legendary head coaches in AFL history. Tampa Bay head coach Tim Marcum, in his 21st season as an AFL coach, holds the league record with 206 career wins. His counterpart, Rush head coach Mike Hohensee, ranks third on the all-time list with 139 victories. With all their experience in the league, the pair has faced each other as head coaches just eight times, with the series between them tied 4-4.

A TALE OF TWO QUARTERBACKS: Rush QB Russ Michna and Tampa Bay QB Brett Dietz both attended Rush training camp as rookies in 2007. Michna beat out Dietz for the job as Matt D'Orazio's backup in 2007 and went on to earn the job as the Rush starter in 2008.

After being released by Chicago at the end of 2007 training camp, Dietz eventually signed as the backup in Tampa. He quickly ascended to the role of starting QB, guiding the team to a 7-1 record under center and earning 2007 AFL Rookie of the Year honors. He has been the Storm's starting QB ever since.

ILL-INI: Storm defensive lineman Tim McGill, a Chicago native, played at Illinois from 1998-99.

EXPECT A DEFENSIVE BATTLE: If the stats hold, expect this week's game between the Rush and Storm to be a low-scoring affair. Tampa leads the league in scoring defense, allowing just 51.4 points per game. The Rush is not far behind, however, entering this week's game tied for third in the AFL, giving up just 52.3 points per game.

ELLIOTT OUT, WATTON SIGNED: Rush center Beau Elliott missed last week's game with a knee injury suffered June 19 vs. Milwaukee. Elliott, who had started the first 11 games for the Rush this season, was replaced on the offensive line by Chris Watton, who was signed June 24.

Watton (6-3, 265, Baylor) is an AFL veteran who spent four years (2005-08) with the Colorado Crush before briefly playing for the Utah Blaze earlier this year.

Watton became the second player this season to step on the field for the Rush without ever practicing with the team, joining Travis LaTendresse on that dubious list.

HE'S THE BOSS: Rush fullback Robert Boss had his best game of the season last week against Orlando. In addition to providing excellent blocking for QB Russ Michna, Boss was a factor in both the running and passing games.

Boss was named Russell Offensive Player of the Game after catching four passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and rushing for nine yards and a TD on six carries.

So far this season Boss has rushed for 111 yards and 10 touchdowns, and caught 14 passes for 157 yards and five TDs. His 15 total touchdowns are tied for the team lead with wide receivers Nichiren Flowers and Samie Parker.

MICHNA FINDS A WAY: In his first game back after missing a week to attend mini-camp with the UFL's Las Vegas Locomotives, QB Russ Michna struggled to find a rhythm. Michna, however, worked his way through his problems and, after completing just 13 of 23 passes (56.5%) through the first three quarters, finished the game by connecting on nine of 12 passes (75%) in the fourth quarter to help the Rush seal the win.

Michna finished the game completing 22 of 35 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns. He did, however, throw an interception in the first half, ending a streak of 131-consecutive pass attempts without tossing an interception.

For the season, Michna has completed 225 of 331 passes for 3,069 yards and 56 touchdowns, while throwing nine interceptions. His QB rating for the year is 125.6.

Michna leads the AFL in both passer rating and completion percentage (67.9%)

PARKER LEAVES RUSH FOR UFL: Rush wide receiver Samie Parker - Chicago's leading receiver this season - has left the team to begin to prepare for the 2010 UFL season, which begins in August.

Parker played in Chicago's first 10 games this season before missing the team's June 19 game vs. Milwaukee to attend mini-camp with the UFL's Las Vegas Locomotives.

He returned in time for last week's game vs. Orlando, leading the team with nine receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Parker finishes his first AFL season with 78 receptions for 1,137 yards and 15 touchdowns in 11 games

A fourth-round draft choice of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004, Parker spent four seasons in Kansas City, catching 110 passes for 1,529 yards and seven TDs. After leaving KC, Parker had stints with the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders before playing with the UFL's Las Vegas Locomotives in 2009.

LATENDRESSE BANGED UP AS WELL: Rush wide receiver Travis LaTendresse is the latest wide receiver to get banged up this season. LaTendresse injured his ankle in the second half of last week's game vs. Orlando, left the game and did not return. He was replaced on offense by DeJuan Alfonzo.

Prior to leaving the game, LaTendresse had caught two passes for 19 yards and a touchdown.

LaTendresse now has played in three games for the Rush - without attending so much as one practice - and has caught 12 passes for 151 yards and seven TDs.

LaTendresse caught 91 passes for 1,105 yards and 20 touchdowns in his first season with the Rush in 2008. He was re-signed by the team on June 10 of this season, prior to Chicago's game at Utah. With the Rush battling injury problems at the receiver position, the Utah resident agreed to return to the team prior to the game against the Blaze.

After signing, LaTendresse met the Rush at the team hotel in Salt Lake City and proceeded to quickly review the playbook with the coaching staff.

Prior to coming to Chicago, LaTendresse played one season for the Las Vegas Gladiators. Before that he was a four-year letterwinner (2002-2005), at the University of Utah, catching 135 passes for 1,782 yards and 12 touchdowns in 43 career games. He finished his college career ranked sixth in Utah history in receptions and ninth in receiving yards.

NEWTON, THOMAS IN SPOTLIGHT: With wide receiver Samie Parker leaving the team for the UFL and starting receivers Kenny Higgins and Nichiren Flowers still on Injured Reserve, the pressure to step up and perform falls on the shoulders of two of the newest members of the Rush, Syvelle Newton and Marco Thomas.

Both players were signed to the Rush roster on June 17 and immediately made their debuts June 19 vs. Milwaukee.

While Thomas saw limited action on special teams, recording one tackle, Newton was plugged right into the team's starting lineup and ended up leading the Rush with 10 receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Neither player, however, was active for last week's win vs. Orlando.

ALFONZO A TRUE IRONMAN: Rush linebacker DeJuan Alfonzo continues to prove why he might be the most valuable player in the AFL. Alfonzo has spent the last few weeks bouncing back and forth from offense to defense - and in some games playing both ways - thanks to the team's injury problems at wide receiver.

Alfonzo was at it again last week vs. Orlando. In addition to playing every snap of the game on defense, Alfonzo played much of the fourth quarter at wide receiver after Travis LaTendresse suffered an ankle injury.

Alfonzo finished with three receptions for 19 yards, giving him 20 catches for 240 yards this season.

PETERS BRINGING PRESSURE: Rush defensive lineman Joe Peters has been the team's most solid lineman this season.

Peters sparked the Rush again last week, recording a first quarter sack of Orlando QB Nick Hill. On the play, Peters forced Hill to fumble and the ball bounced out of the back of the end zone for a safety, giving the Rush an early 9-7 lead. The sack was Peters sixth of the season, which ties him with three other players for the league lead.

For the season, Peters has recorded 25 tackles, three passes broken up and two forced fumbles to go along with his six sacks. He also has blocked three kicks - one short of John Moyer's team record of four set in both 2004 and 2005.

Peters' six sacks this season are tied for the fourth most in a single season in Rush history. He also now has 11 career sacks, which is third on the Rush career list.

Here are Chicago's regular season & career sack leaders:

ROGERS RESURFACES: Rush DB Nygel Rogers was the talk of the AFL in the first month of the season, recording five interceptions in the season's first four weeks. Rogers, however, had been stuck on five interceptions since April 23rd before picking off a Nick Hill pass in the first quarter of last week's win vs. Orlando.

For the season, Rogers has 73 tackles, six interceptions and eight passes broken up.

MARTIN GETS HELP FROM FANS: Rush defensive back Chris Martin intercepted his fifth pass of the season last week vs. Orlando - with a little help from the Rush fans. With Orlando trailing the Rush 50-42 late in the fourth quarter, Preds QB Nick Hill was faced with fourth-and-14 from his own 9-yard line.

Hill dropped back and looked to complete a pass to wide receiver Jerrian James along the boards deep in Chicago territory. Hill's pass, however, drifted into the stands and appeared to bounce off James and then a Rush fan, before it ricocheted back into the field of play where it was intercepted by Martin.

Martin returned the ball six yards before he was tackled at the Rush 10-yard line. Had Martin not caught the ball - or an official ruled it had been touched by a fan - the pass would have been ruled incomplete and the Preds would have lost the ball on downs. Chicago would then have taken over at the Orlando 9-yard line.

LITTLE BIG MAN: Standing at just 5'7", Rush defensive back Josh Ferguson is the smallest player in the AFL this season. However, despite being the smallest, Ferguson has come up with some of the team's biggest plays and is making a case for the league's Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Ferguson leads the Rush with 86 tackles, seven interceptions and 12 passes broken up. He currently is tied for second in the AFL in interceptions and ranks third in tackles. He also is tied for fifth in passes broken up.

PRESSURE UP FRONT: Perhaps one reason the Rush leads the AFL in interceptions with 23 is the fact that the team has been getting consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks, forcing them to throw the ball earlier than planned. Through 12 games the Rush is fourth in the AFL with 16 sacks. Defensive end Joe Peters leads the team with six sacks, while linebacker Clifton Smith has four and defensive linemen Michael Alston has three.

BLOCK THAT KICK: In addition to rushing the passer, the Rush defensive line has been especially good on special teams, blocking eight kicks this season.

Michael Alston is tied with Joe Peters for the team lead in blocked kicks with three, while Darnell Whitley and Clifton Smith have one block each.

John Moyer holds the Rush individual record for blocked kicks in a season with four - set in both 2004 and 2005. The team record for blocked kicks in a season is nine, set in 2004.

GOOD AS GOULD: Rookie kicker Chris Gould, brother of Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould, is enjoying a successful first season with the Rush.

Gould kicked a career-high three field goals last week against Orlando, along with converting all six of his PAT attempts, giving him a season high 15 points.

Through 12 games Gould has connected on 87 of 93 PAT attempts and nine of 12 field goal attempts. Gould now has converted on 34-consecutive PAT attempts, breaking the Rush team record of 32 set by Dan Frantz in 2007.

Gould's last miss came early in the fourth quarter of the team's May 29 game at Cleveland. Gould also had a streak of 29 consecutive PAT attempts earlier this season.

Gould currently leads all AFL kickers in scoring with 114 points, is tied for second in made field goals and ranks second in PAT percentage, converting 93.5% of his extra point attempts.

A 2008 graduate of the University of Virginia, Chris began his college career as a punter before adding the placekicking duties as a junior.

STILL ON THE SIDELINE: While many of the faces have changed, one aspect of the Rush remains the same - head coach Mike Hohensee. Hohensee, the only head coach in Rush history, is back on the sidelines running the team. Now in his ninth season with the Rush, Hohensee has posted a 91-60 overall record, and has led the team to the playoffs in each of its first eight seasons.

In addition to winning ArenaBowl XX, Hohensee has led the Rush to four Central Division titles (2002, 2004, 2007, 2008) and has helped the team advance to the AFL semifinals five times (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007).

Hohensee ranks third in AFL history in career victories, behind Tampa Bay coach Tim Marcum and former Utah and Arizona coach Danny White.

One of only four men to be involved in the Arena Football League in each of the league's 23 seasons, Hohensee:

has a regular season record of 127-97 (including a 83-53 mark with the Rush).

has a career 12-11 mark in the postseason.

has led the Rush to eight-consecutive playoff berths and four Central Division titles (2002, 2004, 2007 and 2008).

is 5-6 all-time vs. Tim Marcum - 1-2 as a player and 4-4 as a coach (2-1 while coach of the Rush).
